THIS IS A DISCUSSION QUESTION

  • Suppose you work in a hospital that just received twelve patients from a disaster event in your community. Your hospital is able to treat and provide necessary surgical services to those that require surgery. However, five patients are refusing care and requesting to be transferred to another hospital for the same services. Suggest the course of action that the hospital should take to meet the standards of the Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act (EMTALA) related to public health in your community. Provide at least two (2) specific examples to support your rationale.
  • Imagine that an unidentified individual with a gunshot wound has been transported to the emergency room. After taking the victim into surgery, the medical team realizes the individual is a minor. Examine the kind of consent that the team should obtain, and determine the resources that they could utilize in order to obtain this consent.

Class according to the grading rubric and the Strayer Writing Standards, you have to support your work.  If you are not including citations or references, then you are committing academic dishonesty and this is grounds for possible plagiarism.  I have explained this in the threads, in the orientation video, in the weekly overview videos, and still people are posting without supporting their work.  So please know that this is a serious issue and I would highly recommend to complete the work based on the requirements or risk zero points and referral to The Academic Integrity Office.

Next:  Please ensure you are using credible research.  You cannot use .com, investopedia.com is the same as wikipedia, and you cannot use them.  You will lost points, if this continues and and may risk getting zero points on your discussions.  Thanks for your understanding

Financial Management In Healthcare

In today’s world of healthcare, capital expenses are a common element to the financial management process. In fact, all healthcare organizations, at some point, must convert to an Electronic Health Record (EHR) system to be compatible with the rest of the world. However, this is a major capital expense that will cost many healthcare organizations millions of dollars. Purchasing an EHR system will undoubtedly require the acquisition and use of long-term assets under a capital budget.

The final assignment of your project will require you to make a recommendation to finance an EHR system, based on information from previous assignments. You will compile all the information in a proposal format, which will be addressed to the organization’s executive managers. You will create a separate presentation as an overview of your proposal.

Your organization is considering financing a 1.5 million dollar EHR system (if an EHR system not a good fit for your case, you can choose any major health information system/technology but the 1.5 million dollar reference should remain the same). Based on the financial outlook of your case/organization, make a recommendation to purchase or not purchase the system. You will need to draw on the material you have learned in throughout the class and assignments; as well as background information from your case description. Collectively, that information will serve as the foundation to support your recommendation.

1-2 Pages

  • Reference documentation attached.
  • Assessment of EHR implementation (or relevant information system) and recommendation; using supportive information from financial management assignments (Proposal)
    • Summarizes and presents a collection of financial management concepts, strategies and methods; applicable to case financial position, needs and challenges.
  • Make sure to use block letter formatting and proposal formatting guidelines. You will need to include a title page. Remember, your audience is the organization’s executive managers. Make sure to use proper audience tone.
  • Include an APA formatted reference page to include at least five (5) academic sources, such as a book or an academic scholarly journal, to support your topic. You should reference your academic sources by including at least five (5) in-text citations.

Your Presentation should be created in MS PowerPoint to include a minimum of seven (7) slides. You will also add a narration to your presentation that should be 15-20 minutes in length. Be sure to discuss your project components in a concise, yet effective manner. You should highlight key points of each component of the Financial Analysis Report, leading up to your EHR recommendation outcome. Include graphical displays (such as graphs or other pictorials) to add visual interest and support of your information. Use a professional tone and keep in mind that you are presenting to the executive management team; consider their interests as stakeholders.

Presentation Outline

  • Introduction
  • Summary of financial statements
  • Summary of financial analysis methods
  • Findings of capital management influences
  • EHR recommendation outcome
  • Summary/Conclusion
  • APA formatted reference slide

INTRODUCTION TO QUALITY ASSURANCE AND QUALITY MANAGEMENT METHODS

Report Issue

Please view this short video:

Healthcare Quality Assurance Success Story
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ed1A6bENVNg

The Session Long Project for this course is to evaluate and critique a health care facility you are familiar with and compare it to the general principles and standards for quality assurance presented in this course. If you are not familiar enough with any particular health care facility to conduct an evaluation of their quality assurance practices you may find a health care facility on the Internet to use as the subject of the SLP. (Most major hospitals publish their quality assurance policies and practices online.)

The purpose of the SLP is to provide you with an opportunity to apply the knowledge and information presented in this course to a facility which must meet specific quality assurance practices and have adopted and implemented specific policies. Through this process you will acquire valuable knowledge on the significance and importance of a quality assurance program in the health care setting.

Session Long Project

The Session Long Project for this course will be divided into four modules as follows:

Module I. Identification of health care facility for the subject of the SLP. Brief description of facility is presented as well as their quality assurance program.

Module II. A discussion and critique of the subject facility’s Utilization Management program will be presented.

Module III. A discussion and critique of the subject facility’s Case Management program will be presented.

Module IV. Discussion of the subject facility’s Risk Management program will be presented.

SLP Assignment Expectations

For this Module I SLP you are to complete the following tasks in a 4- to 5- page paper. (This does not include the title or reference page):

  • Identify an appropriate health care facility for use in the SLP.
  • Provide a description of the facility and it’s organizational structure.
  • Describe the facility’s current Quality Assurance Program.
  • Discuss the mandated requirements, if any, for the facility’s quality assurance program.
  • Has this facility ever had a “never event?” If so, what was it and what were the results?

Are Quality Assurance Programs Necessary? (Discussion Post) (No need for title page or reference page) (Place references below answer)

Are Quality Assurance Programs Necessary?

Roberto Vuittonet

I believe that Programs are necessary to protect patients while under care in a health facility. Unlike other professions, quality healthcare is more important than cost effectiveness. In the US alone, there are more than 98,000 deaths annually due to medical errors. These errors are either human or systematic forcing significant amount of projects, protocol and legislation to address such issues. In other industries quality has also become a priority with companies developing customer oriented strategies (McGlynn et al., 2003). Customers today have more choice in health facilities, therefore health institutions need a lot more than cost to ensure patient satisfaction. Despite the importance of quality in healthcare, it is important to ensure that services are both cost effective. Medicare since its inception has largely prioritized quality. However, there are fears that the increasing cost may affect its ability to ensure quality and safety.

There are approaches if properly implemented can help ensure both quality and cost effective programs. First, it is important to ensure that unnecessary administrative duties are eliminated from healthcare. This means that the system needs eliminate defragmentation. For example, the UK and Canada have successfully implemented unified systems that have better quality and are more cost effective than the US (Friedberg, Hussey & Schneider, 2010). The other alternative involves the implementation of preventive based strategies. Evidence shows that prevention is far cheaper than treatment. For example, diabetes and heart diseases are some of the most expensive diseases to manage but can be prevented with simple steps such as proper nutrition and exercise. These two steps can help guarantee that health programs ensure quality care but are financially viable.

If forced to decide whether a Quality Assurance (QA) program is more important from a cost-effective (i.e., beneficial to the firm) or patient aspect, moral inclination will always side with the patient. After all, what other purpose do institutions, providers, and government regulators associated with the healthcare industry have then to serve and meet the medical needs of consumers? Nevertheless, both aspects are critical, and work in tandem to establish and maintain an effective and sustainable QA program.

The question that pertains to which aspect of quality is more important is a question of quality assurance (QA) and quality control (QC). While used interchangeably, QA & QC actually denote two different aspects of quality management (Quality, n.d). QA refers to the portion of quality management that focuses on providing confidence that outside quality requirements can be fulfilled (Quality, n.d). Here the firm is primarily concerned with appeasing the needs of those outside the firm, to include customers, regulators, the government, and even other firms. This includes everything associated with executing a quality system that provides confidence and fulfills external requirements (Quality, n.d). QC, on the other hand, is defined as the part of quality management that is focused on fulfilling quality requirements (Quality, n.d). While QA is externally focused, QC is instead focused on inspection, and denotes all the operational techniques, procedures, standards, and requirements needed to meet external quality requirements (Quality, n.d). As such, this portion of quality management greatly affects costs and efficiency.

When it comes to overall quality management, both aspects, QA & QC, need to be addressed to create an all-encompassing quality program that meets external and internal needs. To do this, realistic and attainable based objectives need to be set (10 Easy, n.d). This includes setting objectives that meet external requirements. The firm must also set benchmarks that allow them to measure progress and accuracy. This includes the development of key performance indicators (KPI), those that allow the firm to obtain feedback from their quality management system, and make changes as needed (10 Easy, n.d). Finally, firms must assign accountability (10 Easy, n.d). This includes developing and establishing positions and departments whose sole concern is quality management.

Susan Flores

Professor and classmates,

Which of two statements above do you believe is the most important for patients? I believe that the statement that says QA is import for protecting patient while in a facility. Many people think of quality care as a large umbrella where patient can be safe (Mitchell, 2008). The Institute of Medicine feel that safety is the same with good quality care (Mitchell, 2008).

What can we do to ensure high-quality care and also reduce care? When reviewing articles I found a 4 step program to ensure quality  assurance in healthcare. The first step is pick a steering committee (Clark, 2014). This committee will evaluate policies and procedure, make recommendations and set goals. The second step is spreading the work about the quality improvement and get others to buy into the idea. Third is to evaluate the t  findings.  This could be done by looking at patient survey. The fourth and final step is to make corrective action to improving on patient safety (Clark, 2017). In regards to cost effectiveness using electronic medicals records could make sure that all cost are capture for each patent.

International Approaches to Aging

Aging includes the cognitive, physical, and social-emotional changes that occur during late adulthood. Varying cultures take different approaches to aging. At the same time, individuals within these cultures and societies may have varied and distinctly personal views regarding aging. When addressing aging in late adulthood, one must also address death, dying, and bereavement. Religious and spiritual beliefs, gender, personality, and coping style can all impact an individual’s responses to and beliefs about death (Berk, 2019). Today, web-based virtual cemeteries are a new way for people to connect and grieve with each other, even when separated by distance. Nonetheless, varying cultures approach aging in many different ways.

For this Discussion, you will examine how different countries approach aging.

To prepare for this Discussion:

  • Consider how different countries approach aging. As you consider different countries, think about the following:
    • Do older adults live with their children, or are they more likely to live in a nursing home?
    • Are older adults seen as wise individuals to be respected and revered, or are they a burden to their family and to society?
  • Next, select two different countries and compare and contrast their approaches to aging.
By Day 4

Post and identify each of the countries you selected. Then, explain two similarities and two differences in how the countries approach aging. Be specific and provide examples. Use your Learning Resources to support your post. Use proper APA format and citations.

By Day 6

Select one of your colleagues’ posts from which you learned something new and compare it to one of your countries’ approaches to aging.

Return to this Discussion in a few days to read the responses to your initial posting and answer any questions. Note what you have learned and/or any insights you have gained as a result of your colleagues’ comments.

Food And Safety

You will be preparing a narrated PowerPoint Presentation and submitting both the narrated presentation and a written “script” of your presentation (what you narrated for each slide).  The technique for completing this may have been covered in an earlier course, but if you have questions, please review the video below, or the script attached to these assignment instructions.

Your presentation should be between 5 – 10 narrated slides (Minimum 5 content slides), plus a title page and a final reference page slide.  The final slide should include the sources you used in APA format.  A minimum of three valid academic resources should be cited in APA format on the reference slide.

Your readings and lessons from the last two weeks have focused on the different ways that various cultures prepare food that may have an impact on food safety.  For instance, in Japan, fish is often consumed rare, presenting different food safety issues than if the fish was consumed after cooking it to a safe temperature.  Additionally, demographics of a region can affect food safety.  There are many areas of the world that do not have access to a safe water supply or have access to refrigeration in order to safely preserve their raw meats.

The focus of your presentation should be on ONE specific Region/Culture.  The content of your presentation should explain in general how cultural practices and economic demographics affect the safety of the food supply for that region/culture.   Be sure to use specific examples to illustrate the points you are making.  Explain how these cultural or demographic factors could expand beyond that one region and affect the global food supply (think cross border trading, traveling, or food manufacturing).  You may wish to use examples from your own culture to explain your ideas and conclusions, feel free to include photos of your own cultural food preparation practices if it enhances your presentation.

Five elements to include: Cultural practices pertaining to cuisine, economic situation of the region, infrastructure of the region, demographics of the region, global implications from food supply in that region.

You will be graded on the content of your presentation along with your actual presentation skills, i.e. speaking clearly and slowly, making sure that the words and illustrations on your slides enhance what you are explaining verbally (make sure you do not include too many words on your slides or simply read from your slides).  A presentation should be a combination of visuals and narration, working together to present your ideas.

Be sure to submit both the narrated PowerPoint Presentation along with your script in a word document.

Refer to the iRubric for details on how the assignment will be evaluated.  Please ask for any necessary clarifications prior to submitting your assignment.

Complete the case at the end of Chapter 1, “Rio Tinto: Redesigning HR” by answering the questions at the end of the case.

Must be APA format, plagiarism free, avoid using contractions.

Complete the case at the end of Chapter 1, “Rio Tinto: Redesigning HR” by answering the questions at the end of the case.

CASE: Rio Tinto: Redesigning HR

Rio Tinto is a mining and minerals company headquartered in London. The multibillion-dollar company employs over 98,000 people worldwide and operates in more than 60 different sites in over 50 countries.

When the 2008 global recession hit it was clear that a reduction in workforce would be necessary for the company to survive, and 14,000 employees and contractors were let go. HR had been involved in the initial business discussions and understood that the reduction in force (RIF) was necessary. For the first time, Rio Tinto’s HR used a coordinated approach globally. Previously, executives and HR directors in the individual business units would have all approached the downsizing differently. But this time with a common approach, the downsizing took place in an efficient, ethical, and sensitive manner, using regional severance policies and a comprehensive database and measurement tools to track the impact of the redirections. High-potential leaders and people with critical skills were identified and were moved around internally to retain them. Managers were trained to help the “survivors” stay focused. Previously the process would have taken two or three times as long it was estimated, and employee engagement and morale would have taken a much harder hit.

Rio Tinto had undertaken a strategic analysis and reformation of the HR functions before the RIF that made the favorable results possible. The analysis looked at HR functions for both effectiveness and efficiency. All HR functions needed to be delivered at a lower cost while maintaining quality. Previously most HR professionals would have spent their whole career in one plant. Today they move across product groups, locations, and assignments fostering a more consistent culture. A senior HR council to provide leadership and guidance was started. This helped with a consistent HR philosophy that supported policies and standards for the whole company.

Efficiencies were achieved by using more digital processes and adding self-service tools for employees.

Bringing together disparate HR departments across multiple business units increased speed and lowered costs. Further, the company moved from a defined benefit pension plan to a defined contribution plan to conserve cash through reduction in long-term pension liabilities.

Rio Tinto feels that using their human capital better, organizing teams, developing talent, and supporting innovation and creativity can help make the company’s people a source of potential competitive advantage. The company’s HR professionals gained new skills relative to helping productivity in the workforce. The value of a 1% to 2% increase in productivity far outweighed the entire cost of the transformation of Rio Tinto’s HR function.58

1. How did Rio Tinto’s revamping of HR help with minimizing the potential problems with the reduction in force? What role would an HRIS (also called a Human Resource information system) have to play in managing an RIF?

2.  Without a consistent philosophy, policies, and approaches to reduction in force (or any other disruptions in the future) what would the likely reactions from employees be?
