SCI 100 Module Two Activity Template: Scientific Approaches and Questions

Instructions

Address the following about your chosen scientific news story. Replace the bracketed text below with your responses. Use the module overview and resources for assistance. You do not need to conduct outside research.

Part One

Identify an approach to scientific research addressed in the chosen news story.

A researcher from Newcastle University, England, used a family tree study to show that the sex of the children is determined by the father’s genes. In this study, an analysis of 927 family trees contained information of a population of 556387 drawn from America and Europe dating to 1600. The researchers downloaded family trees from the Genealogy Forum, a UK-based genealogy data website, and used computer models to determine the sex ratio for men before and after starting families. The family tree study aimed to see whether the sex ratio for the families followed the father’s or mother’s side. For consistency of the results, the data that seems inaccurate is eliminated, for example, in people that claim more than two parents or in transgender individuals.

Part Two

Draft two research questions you are interested in asking about the main idea of your news story. Ensure that both of your questions are measurable and focused.

Will men with more brothers than sisters have more sons and daughters?

Does sex-ratio for families follow the father’s or mother’s side?
