Researchers usually develop new theories or build on old theories to explain some of the circumstances and scenarios being observed. Conceptual frameworks and models are used by researchers to describe and explain occurrence of various events and processes which are being observed. This paper therefore seeks to examine the role of models and theories in evidence-based practice and research.
Models and theories and models are therefore useful in that they provide a thorough understanding of processes and events. It also allows the researchers to explore various processes and events in more meaningful ways. Theories and models assist in analyzing research questions. The research questions should be aligned with existing models or theories. According to (Finn, 2011) critical thinking skills are required when conducting a research.
Theories and models usually form the basis of the research design (Polit & Beck, 2017). It is therefore important for researchers to select the most suitable theory or model to address the research question. It is therefore important to note that selection of the theory or model to be used in the research study is an integral part of the research process.
One of the theories which are currently used in nursing research is the Watson’s theory of human caring. (Ozan & Okumuş, 2017) evaluated the effectiveness of nursing caring program basing on Watson’s theory of human caring. The theory provides an effective structure and foundation of this particular research in the article. Watson’s theory of human caring provides a guideline to nursing patients who have infertility problems in this research. The theory suggests ways of decreasing the levels of distress and anxiety, increasing positive coping styles among infertile women. In this case the model is providing an important structure to the research study which is described in the article.
The issue in my practice area (Psychiatric Unit) that I would be interested in exploring through research is the “Effects of nursing care on distress, anxiety, and coping, when psychiatric treatment fails.” This research will be based on the Watson’s theory of human caring.
Models and theories form an integral part of research. The role which models, and theories play in nursing research cannot be underestimated. It is therefore important for nursing researchers to apply the various models and theories in research and evidence-based practice.
