This assignment offers the opportunity for students to:

Investigate the characteristics of a team

Study various models of team and team behaviours

Identify their own personal characteristics

Analyse and reflect upon team structure, referencing known and acknowledged team models.

Section A:  Team Characteristics; Analysis of an Existing Team

Too often, teams are formed merely by gathering some people together and then hoping that those people somehow find a way to work together. History shows us that teamwork is an important component of the effective functioning of any team.  Belbin and others, tell us that teams are most effective when carefully designed.

Choose a team with which you are familiar.  Using this team as the case study, analyse how the current teams are structured and reflect upon their success in achieving the team’s goals.  Discuss the factors that are currently promoting or inhibiting successful teamwork and make suggestions as to changes within the team roles that would encourage growth and greater success within this team.  Draw on your knowledge and studies of different models to reference and evaluate both the tools and your suggestions.

 Section B:  Personal Analysis

You have completed many of the assessment tools yourself.  Using your personal results as evidence create a personal introduction or job advertisement for yourself. This may be written in humour or as an introduction to yourself or as a “best ways to work with me” type feature but it should clearly identify the roles you are most suitable to fill, those you are least suitable for and other characteristics that impact on your ability to function within a team. Include the reports from your personality testing as appendices and reference them as per academic referencing.
