1. Identify the performance requirements and compliance criteria from the BCA that apply to this construction project:
2. List the relevant BCA deemed-to-satisfy (DTS) solutions:
3. List at least two of the Australian Standards referenced in the BCA, and explain in your own words what you would need to do to ensure you meet these.
4. What is the nature (in terms of purpose and size) of the building to be constructed in this project?
5. Using the NCC (BCA) select the Class of building to be constructed
6. Find and explain any BCA requirements for multiple classifications. Do they apply to this project?
7. Thinking about the Lintel/Head to be used over the door opening, discuss and propose the construction method you would use to ensure you comply with NCC (BCA) requirements:
8. Using the BCA, consider your proposed solution, indicate which pathway (Compliance Solutions) you are following and give a brief description of what is involved.
9. Research and explain the Passive and Active fire control basics required by the BCA and other legislation:
10. Describe the level of fire resistance you need to have for this construction project:
11. Using an existing building, possibly your own home see if it is compliant with Passive and Active fire protection required by NCC (BCA):
12. Check the Passive and active fire protection and state at least 4 that are in place. eg Passive fire proof material behind the internal combustion heater, and Explain how each of these items comply with the requirements of the NCC (BCA).
Knowledge Check
1 Describe each level of the BCA performance hierarchy (2015) and the NCC Compliance Structure (2016)
2. How do the properties of materials affect the way in which decisions are made when determining if DTS provisions are adequate or proposing alternate solutions?
3. What other guiding and governing considerations must also be taken into account when following BCA and Australian Standards?
4. Briefly describe your business’ requirements for quality (include any process and procedures such as quality assurance checks on level of finish and tolerances):
5. A building solution will comply with the BCA if it meets the Performance requirements set out by the BCA. Describe what a performance requirement is and provide an example:
6. What are the acceptable assessment methods that can be applied to ensure Australian Standards and codes are still met when a performance solution is used in place of the given deemed-to-satisfy solution?

Assessor Instructions: This assessment allows the learner to apply their skills and knowledge in their business. The learner should apply this project to their own business activities. If they’re unable to apply this to their business (the activities being undertaken are not aligned with the requirements of the assessment), the learner may use a hypothetical scenario, or work from a previous project. The work must be all the learner’s own. In the case of work being completed by another person in the business, the learner must repeat the task (for example creating a process) in their own words and applying the learnings from the workshop and self study for this unit.
This project must be completed in full. Responses should apply directly to the learner’s workplace. Where this cannot be completed in the work environment, the responses may be industry related or scenario responses. Learners are to indicate in their responses where they are relevant to their own business, the industry in general or a simulated business scenario.
For this assessment you are to demonstrate your ability to
• Access and interpret relevant code and standard requirements
• Classify buildings
• Analyse and apply a range of solutions to a construction problem for compliance with the BCA
• Apply fire protection requirements
• Applying relevant legislative and WHS requirements, codes and practices.
