Explain of the impact, if any, the experiences and opinions of your colleagues have had on your own experiences and opinions.

Discussion 2: The Social Work Advocate in Politics

Social workers often have commitments to specific policies, laws, or funding of programs that are vital to the population they serve or an issue that they strongly support. Such commitments often lead social workers to become involved in political issues and the campaigns of specific candidates. Being a social worker, such campaign experiences, the outcomes of your efforts, and how effective you felt you were may affect your view of the political process and the likelihood of becoming involved in similar campaigns in the future.

For this Discussion, reflect on your experiences if you have ever participated in a political campaign. What was the outcome of your participation? If you have not participated in a campaign, choose a campaign topic you support or oppose and consider the ways you might like to participate in that campaign. Likewise, think about your experiences if you have ever lobbied on a topic. If you have not, choose a topic for which you might like to lobby in favor or against. Finally, consider how you think social workers might have a powerful and positive effect as elected officials.

Your answer should be in a essay format. But write down each question before each answer.

1-Write an explanation of the role of lobbying and campaigning in social work practice.

2-Explain how you think social workers might have a powerful and positive effect as elected officials.

3-Explain of the impact, if any, the experiences and opinions of your colleagues have had on your own experiences and opinions.

3-Offer a suggestion for how your colleague might gain political and/or lobbying experience for the political issue your colleagues described.

4-Explain the steps you might take to incorporate policy advocacy in your practice based on insights, experiences, and/or opinions your colleagues described. Be sure your explanation takes the perspective of a social work professional with a responsibility to uphold professional ethics.

What has been your own experience with enacting friendships of  utility and/or feigning friendship in order to secure your employment or  future career prospects? Do you believe this is ethical? Explain your  answer.

Work friendships are often tenuous and can depend on the quality of  one’s productivity in the workplace environment. When the work suffers,  then the friendship can quickly turn volatile. Sociologists often report  that people will more likely fake their friendships at work not to  upset their career prospects (Vernon, p. 27).

In at least 350  words total, please answer each of the following, drawing upon your  reading materials and your personal insight. In this week’s reading  material, the following philosophers discuss their views on this topic:  Aristotle, Russell, Smith Ferguson, Marx and Simmel. Make sure to  incorporate their views as you answer each discussion question. Think  about how their views may be similar or different from your own as you  answer the following questions:

  • To what extent do you personally agree with the sociologist’s findings and distrust the sincerity of your work colleagues?
  • What has been your own experience with enacting friendships of  utility and/or feigning friendship in order to secure your employment or  future career prospects? Do you believe this is ethical? Explain your  answer.

Many companies are aware of the research that indicates that  friendships at work increase productivity and overall job satisfaction  (p. 17). People with friends at work are even twice as likely to believe  they are well-paid (p. 17). Those who share friendships at work are  more likely to share ideas, be innovative, and feel like their work has  real meaning and purpose (p. 17).

In reality, commercial society encourages friendliness but not strong  alliances, which can undermine the authority of industry. In short,  strong friendships can prove time consuming and produce less productive  workers, as well as contribute to nepotism and cronyism (p. 39). Other  thinkers and critics have noted the drive toward individualism and  competition that commercialism promotes, which undermines genuine  connection.

Consider the concepts from the Module 4 readings as you participate  in the module’s discussions and complete the poll. Be sure to cite the  textbook or other sources in your work.

Identify the processes that define you as a human being (e.g., digestion, sense perception) and that would be necessary to include in your replica.

Assignment Topic

Imagine that you are a scientist, and write a proposal for creating a replica of yourself. (You cannot propose cloning yourself!) More specifically, you are asked to do the following:

  • Identify the processes that define you as a human being (e.g., digestion, sense perception) and that would be necessary to include in your replica.
  • Critically discuss whether you would propose a Cartesian or a physicalist model of the relationship between mind and body in order to create your replica. To “critically” discuss your proposed model, you must: a. explain either the Cartesian or the physicalist model; and b. weigh the pros and cons of whichever model you think would work best for your replica.
  • Using Locke’s theory of personal identity, present the criteria by which your replica will remain the same person over time.

Further Specifications:

  • You do not need to write a standard introduction with a thesis statement, as you have been required to do for earlier philosophy papers. You may simply begin with something like: “I am Professor [YOUR NAME] at Florida International University, and I am submitting a proposal to create a replica of myself.”
  • You should make use of the primary sources we studied (e.g., Descartes’ Meditations). You should not exclusively rely on secondary sources.

Dedicate at least two-to-three paragraphs to a formal analysis about a shot, scene, or scenes that supports the argument of your paper. (basically  a condensed version of what you did for Paper One)

References: Make reference to at least three critical/academic sources.

Citations: Use any  standard system of citations (in-text, footnotes, etc). If using in-text citations, then be sure to add a Works Cited or Bibliography page.

By this point in the course, you have developed a competence in formal analysis. Now, we increase the scale of your analysis: the analysis of a complete film. In your first paper, you analyzed a shot and a scene. For  your second 4-6 page paper, you are asked to evaluate one film in its entirety.

In short, you must select a film seen (in whole or in part) during class lectures or screenings (Monday screenings or online  assignments) and write a paper about ONE DIMENSION of that film that you find interesting.  There is no question to answer; rather you have to decide what in the film  is worth writing about. You create the question and the answer. It helps if you can decide what approach you are taking. Some common approaches are:

A. Formal analysis: An element of film form (for example, lighting, mise-en-scene, or camera movement).  For example, the use of wide-screen in Kurosawa’s High and Low or the use of color in Masumura’s Giants and Toys.

B. Representational analysis: A single element which is represented in a distinctive way. For examplee, the question  of truth in Rashomon, economic growth in Masumura’s Giants and Toys, or revenge in Miike’s Audition.

C. Auteurist analysis: A pattern, tendency, or element that is important in the context of a filmmaker’s body of work. Remember, for example, the still image in Ozu.

D. Feminist analysis: The representation of gender and sex, with special attention to  cinema’s alignment of the camera with conventional, gendered ways of seeing/looking and being seen/being looked at. For  example, the portrayal of women in genre films like Tampopo or Audition.

E. National and/or Historical analysis: how national identity or history is portrayed through film

F. Genre analysis:  How a film participates, advances, or deviates from its genre or genres.

Since we are still learning and you are not professional film critics  (at least, not yet!), there are a few guidelines to follow:

1) Dedicate at least two-to-three paragraphs to a formal analysis about a shot, scene, or scenes that supports the argument of your paper. (basically  a condensed version of what you did for Paper One)

2)  Be sure to reference three critical or scholarly  sources.

3)  Your paper should also situate the film next to two other films. In other words, depending on your approach, make some reference  to other films that support your argument and that highlight by similarity or contrast the point you are trying to make.

Identify the reasons why you think these two threats are less critical than the four threats you chose for your PowerPoint presentation.

The information you provided in your PowerPoint presentation on Threats to the Global Environment has led to productive debates at the United Nations General Assembly! Hence, they are now asking you to create an additional analysis report to respond to the issues raised in these debates.

Your fourth project as a consultant for the United Nations is to develop a report that addresses the issues raised by some of the member states of the United Nations.

Step I. Consider the Issues

In Assignment 3a, you were asked to create a PowerPoint identifying the four most critical threats out of eight threats provided in the table below.

Energy sources

Civil war

Globalization

Poor health of entire populations

Lack of educational opportunities

Cultural taboos

Inappropriate uses of technology

Climate change

There are four remaining threats that you did not discuss in your PowerPoint. This assignment will focus on those four. Here are the specific tasks you will complete:

  • Review the remaining four threats that you did not use in Assignment 3a.
  • Pick two of the four to focus on in Assignment 3b.
  • Identify the reasons why you think these two threats are less critical than the four threats you chose for your PowerPoint presentation.

Step II. Prepare Your Report

The UN has given you the following guidelines.

Introduction

Briefly introduce the topic of the analysis (about 100-150 words).

  1. State the topic and intent of the paper.
  2. Identify the four threats you will discuss in the paper in the order in which they appear in the paper.

Section I. Threat 1

  1. Write an opening statement describing the perception of the threat.
  2. Write one page giving three reasons that explain why you saw this threat as less critical than the four you chose for your presentation in Assignment 3a.
  3. Support these reasons with at least three credible sources.

Section II. Threat 2

  1. Write an opening statement describing the perception of the threat.
  2. Write one page giving three reasons to explain why you saw this threat as less critical than the four you chose for your presentation in Assignment 3a.
  3. Support these reasons with at least three credible sources.

Conclusion

  • Offer a summary (one page or less) of your defense of your choices that the United Nations can use to address their prioritization concerns.

Formatting Requirements

  • Your paper may consist of up to four pages (not including the cover or reference pages).
  • Create headings for each section of your paper as follows:
    • Introduction
    • Threat 1 (include the name of your chosen threat)
    • Threat 2 (include the name of your chosen threat)
    • Conclusion
  • Use and cite four to six credible sources in your analysis. You may use the same source for more than one threat as long as you use a minimum of four different sources. A list of potential resources is available at the end of this course guide.
  • Make sure your paper contains both in-text citations and a source list, per SWS guidelines; refer to the Strayer Writing Standards (SWS) document for reference.
  • Include a cover page with your name, the date you submitted the paper, and your instructor’s name.

The specific course learning outcome associated with this assignment is as follows:

  • Examine the factors that account for why the growth in the world’s population can negatively affect the global society.

Identify two significant external factors that might influence your work if you served in a leadership or management role in social work. Explain why these external factors are significant and how they might affect your work as a leader or manager.

you began exploring the similarities and differences of leadership and management roles and the contributions these roles make to an organization’s functioning. Social workers need to be aware of these similarities and differences in order to determine which management or leadership skills are most appropriate in a given position or situation.

This week, you have focused on the influence of external factors on an organization’s functioning with a special focus on their impact on the leadership of social workers in supervisory roles.

As you have explored leadership and management roles, skills, and behaviors, you may have become aware of how these align, or do not align, with your personal skills, strengths, and interests. You may also have begun to consider how external factors might influence you if you were to assume a leadership or management role in social work.

For this Assignment, you assess your strengths and areas for growth in order to determine what aspects of leadership and management are a good “fit” with your personality, leadership style, and relevant skills. You also address how external factors might influence you as you serve in a leadership or management role.

Assignment (4–5 paragraphs): Complete the following:

  • Assess your strengths and areas for growth with regard to both the leadership and management roles based on what you understand about these roles so far. Be sure to address whether your skills and interests align better with the leadership or management role.
  • Identify at least one area of growth in either of these roles you would like to further develop, and explain why.
  • Identify two significant external factors that might influence your work if you served in a leadership or management role in social work. Explain why these external factors are significant and how they might affect your work as a leader or manager.

Describe the practice and the evidence supporting it. Explain why you think this intervention is appropriate for Jake.

When treating clients, social workers must ensure that the evidence-based practice is appropriate for the client and the problem. Then, the social worker must get the client and other stakeholders to support the selected evidence-based practice. To earn that support, the social worker should present the client and stakeholders with a plan for implementation and evidence of the evidence-based practice efficacy and appropriateness. Social workers must demonstrate that they have carefully considered the steps necessary to implement the evidence-based practice, identified factors in the current environment that support implementation of the evidence-based practice, and addressed those factors that may hinder the successful implementation.

For this week’s Discussion, you will take on the role of the social worker in the Levy case study. You will choose an evidence-based practice and attempt to gain the support of both the client and supervisor. To do so, you will address its efficacy, appropriateness, and factors that may impact implementation of the evidence-based practice that you chose.

To prepare for this Discussion, review Levy Episode 2. Then using the registries provided in this week’s resources and the Walden Library, locate an evidence-based practice that you believe would be appropriate for Jake’s case. Then, review the Evidence-Based Practice kit for Family Psycho Education from the SAMHSA website from the resources. Note all the steps and considerations involved in implementing the evidence-based practice and which of these considerations apply to this case. Consider issues such as agency support, resources, and costs that might support or limit the application of the evidence-based intervention that you select.

Post an evaluation of the evidence-based practice that you selected for Jake. Describe the practice and the evidence supporting it. Explain why you think this intervention is appropriate for Jake. Then provide an explanation for the supervisor regarding issues related to implementation. Identify two factors that you believe are necessary for successful implementation of the evidence-based practice and explain why. Then, identify two factors that you believe may hinder implementation and explain how you might mitigate these factors. Be sure to include APA citations and references.

What are the implications of this statement? In your essay also outline his criticism of religion and his genealogy of morals.

(Paper: MLA style: double space, font size 12 – times new roman, works cited page). Use the original text and at least one other peer-reviewed secondary source. Sparknotes, Wikipedia or other non-scholarly sources will result in a negative score. If papers are late, your grade will be reduced by 2% of the paper grade potential per day.

1) Explore Descartes’ method of doubt and his proof of certainty, Cogito Ergo Sum (I think therefore I am), proof of God’s existence and finally his certainty that the world exists. Why does he go through this method and how did this alter medieval epistemology?

2) John Locke (1632-1704) states “Life, Liberty and Property” are natural rights of man pre-empting capitalism. Karl Marx (1818-1883) seeks to abolish private property due to, among other things, the exploitation of the proletariat (working class). Both thinkers believe in equality. Why do they both disagree when it comes to property rights?

3) Albert Camus wrote the Myth of Sisyphus which asks this: if life is absurd (which he claims it is) then what makes life worth living? Explore Camus’ philosophy of absurdism and why we must still “imagine Sisyphus happy.” (excerpt on blackboard).

4) In the 19th century Nietzsche claimed, “God is dead, he remains dead, and we killed him.” What are the implications of this statement? In your essay also outline his criticism of religion and his genealogy of morals.

5) Simone de Beauvoir wrote a revolutionary feminist work, The Second Sex. Here Simone De Beauvoir asked herself “Is there any such a ‘thing’ as woman?” and “Do women even exist?” If so, then, “What is a woman?” What do these questions mean and how does she answer them? (consider her most famous quote is “One is not born, but rather becomes Woman.”)

6) According to the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) we have 12 years to attain a carbon neutral footprint so that the planetary warming can stay below the projected 2 degree increase. Choose one of our environmental articles on blackboard and through a critical examination of the text, explain what the author suggests, either explicitly or implicitly, is the main obstacle to solutions.
