Discuss the implications of what the article has to say regarding your research question

Submit this assignment in two places: 1) Assignments folder in Week 5 and 2) turnitin.com.

Description: Part III of your Applied Final Project is an extension of Part II.  Using the UMUC library databases, please identify 9 additional empirical, scholarly articles that represent at least 2 other social science disciplines from the article you chose in Part II.  A list of appropriate social science disciplines can be found under the description for Part I. Remember that your articles must represent at least 3 social science disciplines in total.

Your articles should reflect the current research on your topic, so your articles should be not more than 5 years old. For this assignment, at least 6 of your 9 articles should have been published within the past 5 years. Your remaining three articles can include older, seminal works that have been important in guiding current research. You will know that a work is “seminal” or at least noteworthy if most of the recent articles you find refer to it. If you decide to use an article that is older than 5 years, be sure to state why you felt this article was important to include.

Just as you did in Part II, please

  • Give the article name, authors, and source of the article
  • Identify which social science discipline your article represents
  • Summarize the main tenets of the article.
  • Discuss the implications of what the article has to say regarding your research question

Please make sure that you choose articles that contrast in some way.  If all of the articles align and say very similar things, you won’t be able to truly draw on the strengths of an interdisciplinary perspective.   Some of the articles you find may discuss your topic using research from a different country.  Feel free to draw on this information. Although you are not required to present a cross-cultural comparison, if you find articles that are relevant, please feel free to incorporate them.

You are not required to write a cohesive paper based on your research articles.  You may list your write-ups in order in a Microsoft Word document, but you do not need to synthesize them.  This synthesis and analysis is key to your final research poster, but does not need to be present in this part of the assignment.

Please submit this assignment to turnitin.com in order to check for plagiarism in your article summaries and submit the originality report along with Part III to the Assignment Folder.

Explain how that relates to the perception of disability. Be specific and draw on examples from the Parker case to illustrate your thoughts.

Consider the notion that an individual with a disability may feel primarily defined by his or her ability status. Also, consider the historical treatment of people with disabilities and the number of individuals who were euthanized and sterilized in the U.S. and across the globe due to having a disability.

For decades, individuals with disabilities were left in institutions, hidden away from the rest of society. Parents were told if their child was born with a disability, they should have them locked away. Consider in today’s society how people with disabilities are still “hidden.” Think about how many people you see each day that have a visible disability. While there are many hidden disabilities that should not be ignored, it is significant to recognize the limited number of people you see each day with disabilities. Also, consider how others react toward a person with a disability in public. Do they stare? Do they move away? Do they invade the person’s space and ask inappropriate questions? What experiences have you seen in public with a person with a disability? Why do you think society has marginalized this group for so long? Why are those with disabilities limited or eliminated from full participation in society today? Who has the right to decide what makes a “good life” and how is that decision made?

To prepare: Read the case “Working With Individuals With Disabilities: Valerie.”

By Day 3

1. Post an explanation of why our society has marginalized those with varying abilities historically.

2. Then, explain the role of social workers in supporting clients with varying abilities (not limited to physical and mental) while recognizing and honoring those clients’ other identity characteristics. Use specific examples from the case study in your explanation.

DISCUSSION 2  –  LINK TO VIDEO WILL BE ATTACHED AS WELL

To prepare: View this week’s media, Parker (Episode 30).

Think of the many names and labels you may have heard to describe persons with disabilities and those that are currently socially acceptable. The changing monikers given to those with disabilities are evidence of the continual negotiation of the society who labels and those who are so labeled to define what disability is and who is disabled. What do these shifting labels suggest about the social construction of disability?

Society is inconsistent in its treatment and protection of the rights of individuals with disabilities, creating a situation that contributes to marginalization that can complicate other forms of marginalization and oppression. Consider that being labeled with a disability can be simultaneously something to be fought against because of the stigma it entails and fought for because of the access that it grants to social services that meet basic medical needs, aid economic survival, and improve access to education that society can otherwise deny.

By Day 5

1. Post an analysis of the implications of the social construction of disability.

2. Describe how disability can be defined as a social construct.

3. Explain how that relates to the perception of disability. Be specific and draw on examples from the Parker case to illustrate your thoughts.

4. Also, describe the intersection of Stephanie’s mental illness with other characteristics of her identity.

5. Explain how those intersections could serve to further marginalize Stephanie’s place and experiences in society.

6. Finally, explain how such marginalization impacts her ability to make choices, use self-determination, and be an active agent with equitable status in her interactions with other professionals.

describe a scenario in which a bystander could have influenced this scenario in a different way.

Discussion 1 – MYTHS OF SEXUAL VIOLENCE

Myths and misinformation surround the topic of sexual violence. For years, these myths have hung around the discourse, further muddying an already difficult topic about which to communicate. Although all myths can be harmful, there are some that may be arguably more harmful. For this Discussion, you identify some of the myths surrounding the topic of sexual abuse and consider why they have remained so prevalent.

Post an explanation of which myths of sexual violence you think are the most harmful and why. Please use the Learning Resources to support your answer.

DISCUSSION 2 – BYSTANDER INTERVENTION

Separating fact from fiction is imperative when learning how to recognize and respond appropriately, and effectively, to victim/survivors, and bystanders/witnesses, of sexual violence. Although a large majority of sexual assaults do not happen in public settings, in some cases, they do. This is when it is important to understand the experience of the bystander. Bystander intervention can help to explain how, when, and where these kinds of assaults take place; at times, it may even prevent the assault from happening. For this week’s Discussion, watch the video case study of Talia. Locate research on bystander intervention by Victoria L. Banyard and/or Sarah McMahon.

Post your application of the theory of bystander intervention to the behavior of those exhibited in the video. Then, describe a scenario in which a bystander could have influenced this scenario in a different way. Please use the Learning Resources to support your answer

Explain your interpretation of what occurred in the dialogue, including social work practice theories, and explain how it might relate to diversity or cultural competence covered this week.

A process recording is a written tool used by field education experience students, field instructors, and faculty to examine the dynamics of social work interactions in time. Process recordings can help in developing and refining interviewing and intervention skills. By conceptualizing and organizing ongoing activities with social work clients, you are able to clarify the purpose of interviews and interventions, identify personal and professional strengths and weaknesses, and improve self-awareness. The process recording is also a useful tool in exploring the interpersonal dynamics and values operating between you and the client system through an analysis of filtering the process used in recording a session.

For this Assignment, you will submit a process recording of your field education experiences specific to this week.

(Please see attached example as to how assignment should be done).

Note: You are submitting a written transcript, not an audio or video recording.

The Assignment (2–4 pages) (Blank template is attached):

· Provide a transcript of what happened during your field education experience, including a dialogue of interaction with a client (students internship is an inpatient mental health hospital as a therapist. Serving clients with mental health and substance abuse).

· Explain your interpretation of what occurred in the dialogue, including social work practice theories, and explain how it might relate to diversity or cultural competence covered this week.

· Describe your reactions and/or any issues related to your interaction with a client during your field education experience.

· Explain how you applied social work practice skills when performing the activities during your process recording

Describe specific skills you would use to 1) talk to clients about Advanced Directives, 2) assist clients in completing an Advanced Directive, and 3) help families to apply an Advanced Directive.

How much would you be willing to go through to extend your life, possibly while compromising the quality of that life?

With the advancement of medicine, technology can extend life; however, at what point does the medical profession withhold or withdraw life-sustaining care? Advance directives are living wills and essential to ensure a patient receives or does not receive the medical treatment they would want, yet few people have them in place and even fewer know what they are or what they are for.

Advanced directives are written forms acknowledging your medical wishes should you ever be in a position where you are unable to voice those wishes for yourself. Providing an advanced directive means telling people you love what they should do so they aren’t put in the place of having to try and guess what you would have wanted—Would you want to be resuscitated with shocks? Would you want to be on a ventilator? Would you want a feeding tube? How long would you want any of these?

Fill out those forms for yourself with your own directives (See attachment). Then, if possible, have the talk with someone you love about the choices you have made. You are encouraged to make several copies and give one to your physician, one to a family member, and one filed with your personal papers (remember you will want to update the forms every few years). You will not submit your advanced directive to this course.

In a 4-5 page paper not including title page:

· Reflect on the experience completing an Advanced Directive. Consider:

o What was it like thinking and talking about the “what if’s,” “when’s,” and “why’s”? (My response: Scary, this is a very sensitive topic matter. Not something I like to talk or think about)

o How did you feel when thinking about and talking with your loved one about the choices you would make in different medical scenarios? (Response: It makes me sad. I know its reality but I’m not ready to face that part yet).

o How willing were others to talk with you about your wishes and choices you made in the Advanced Directive? (Response: My mom was willing even though she disliked that the conversation is being discussed).

· Explain any insights you gained from this activity that might help you as a social worker.

· Describe specific skills you would use to 1) talk to clients about Advanced Directives, 2) assist clients in completing an Advanced Directive, and 3) help families to apply an Advanced Directive.

· Explain one ethical issue (e.g., medical, social, or public health) that is relevant to a medical Advanced Directive.

· Explain two sides of the ethical issue.

· Describe the course of action you might take to address the ethical issue as the medical social worker responsible for this patient, explaining the specific benefits your decision might provide to the patient and the family.

Discuss individual preparedness including are individuals adequately self-sufficient and concerned for their own welfare and safety?

Natural Hazards, Unnatural Disasters, (Entire Book)

Assignment: Provide an approximate 1500-word  document analyzing important concepts in the readings. Assume that you are writing for an uninformed reader that knows nothing about the topic and has not read what you read. Provide an introduction that gives the background of the resource that you are reviewing, so the reader will understand what they’re reading and why. Include the following topics for inclusion in this week’s discussion:

– Discuss Hazard Clustering including how do hazards ‘cluster’ and what are the impacts?

– Discuss how  disasters impact the economy and growth?

– Discuss individual preparedness including are individuals adequately self-sufficient and concerned for their own welfare and safety?

– Discuss how governments can help individuals and society overall?

– What is the role of insurance? Is insurance sustainable in an environment of increasing risk?

– How are cities inherently hazardous?

– How would your perspective of disaster change if a disaster similar to those described happened to you?

DO NOT list out the topics or questions and answer them. They are not meant to be all-inclusive, and your reader will not understand the context. Rather, give an overview of the author’s entire body of work, using the topics as guidelines. Explain medical conditions where you might consider palliative care over hospice care for a patient. Justify your position. Use examples to illustrate your case.

Palliative care refers to specialized medical care that focuses on providing relief from physical symptoms and improving the quality of life of patients and caregivers. Palliative care can be provided to patients with any medical condition at any stage of illness to relieve symptoms. It can be a patient’s primary treatment (which is often the case with end-of-life care), or it can be provided in combination with standard medical treatments. Palliative care team members work alongside a patient’s medical team and can include professionals from multiple disciplines, including doctors, nurses, social workers, and chaplains.

To prepare for this Discussion:

Review this week’s resources (See attachments). Think about the circumstances, timing, payment, and other features related to palliative care.

Assignment

Post a description of perceptions of palliative care from the perspective of a:

Patient

Caregiver

Social Worker

Then, explain the roles of social workers in providing palliative care. Compare and contrast the fundamental differences between palliative care and hospice care. Explain medical conditions where you might consider palliative care over hospice care for a patient. Justify your position. Use examples to illustrate your case.

Be sure to support your postings and responses with specific references to the resources and the current literature using appropriate APA format and style.

Health Care Organizations in U.S.

Conduct a research on one of the top fifteen health care organizations in the U.S.

Your research should include the following questions:

· How will you find listings of the top fifteen health care systems?

· What are the various components of the selected health care system? How does it rank in terms of reduced mortality and infection rates?

· What are the services provided by the healthcare delivery system?

· What are the current trends contributing to the high ranking and the future path of this health care organization?

· How does the organization manage and distribute resources for improved patient care?

In a Microsoft Word document, create a 2-page report, on the basis of your research. Provide at least two resources or journal articles referring to the selected organization.

Global Warming: A Major Concern

According to World Health Organization (WHO), global warming is the primary issues for concern. Noise pollution, overcrowding, traffic jams are some factors that have led to this problem. Lack of privacy is another factor in the modern times that is impacting people in ways that haven’t been examined yet. We also see a wide variance in weather patterns, such as severe hurricanes and drought conditions in the U.S.

Source: World Health Organization (WHO). (n.d.). Climate change. Retrieved from http://www.who.int/topics/climate/en/

Based on your understanding of the topic, create a report in a Microsoft Word document answering the following questions:

· Examine one weather condition over the past two years in the U.S. which drastically affected the population. How can the community better prepare their families for such severe conditions?

· Do you agree with the statement that countries should be held accountable for their contribution to climate change? Why or why not?

· List some of the issues that might occur as the world’s population increases? Factor in water, food, and hazardous waste into your comments. Suggest ideas to address or avoid these issues.

According to the CDC website, violence is attributed for approximately fifty thousand deaths each year and results in over 2.5 million injuries. Homicide and suicide are the second and third leading causes of death, respectively, among US population aged fifteen to thirty-four years.

Hospital emergency departments treat an average of fifty-five people for injuries every minute. The worst after effect of the sudden population explosion across the globe is the rise in violence.

· How have violent injuries affected a community? What steps have communities taken to decrease overall violent crimes?

· What steps can the federal or state governments take to help support communities affected from random or consistent violent acts?

· What can parents do in their homes to help educate children about risks and preventative accidents to help keep them safe? What role should parents take to reduce family violence?

· How can health promotion and wellness programs play a significant role to reduce individual or gang violence?

· How can schools and work environments increase safety measures against violent individuals or gangs entering their establishments?

· What roles should parents, neighbors, friends, health care personnel, and the community take when they observe someone who may exhibit unusual behavior or comments to help prevent potential violence? What agencies or resources are available to help communities cope and help their members seek help or assistance?

Which do you think is a more accurate representation of your energy consumption and greenhouse gas production? Why?

There has been a great deal of discussion about exactly how we can begin to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions and hopefully reach the levels set for the 2 degree solution. We have all heard about many possible approaches to get industry, communities, and individuals to make the changes we need if we are going to reduce these greenhouse gasses. In this discussion, we are going to examine our “carbon footprints” or “ecological footprints,” compare the scores with each other, and examine ways to reduce our impact on the environment and perhaps save us some money at the same time!

An ecological footprint is an expanded look at the carbon footprint idea. A carbon footprint measures direct consumption of products and resources that come directly from or with fossil fuel consumption, such as your car, your home, and air travel. The ecological footprint digs a bit deeper. “The ecological footprint measures the amount of biologically productive land and water area an individual, a city, a country, a region, or all of humanity uses to produce the resources it consumes and to absorb the waste it generates with today’s technology and resource management practices. Biologically productive land includes areas such as cropland, forest, and fishing grounds, and excludes deserts, glaciers, and the open ocean” (Earth Day Ecological Footprint Calculator, 2016).

First:

Calculate one score for your carbon footprint and one score for your ecological footprint from the sites listed below or another you have located that has a calculator and provides a score you can compare.

  • Carbon Footprint site:
    • The Nature Conservancy (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. – You will answer questions and your carbon footprint will be calculated for you. Be sure to record all of your results before leaving the page.
  • Ecological Footprint sites (choose one):
    • Eco Footprint Calculator (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.
    • Islandwood Ecological Footprint Calculator (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.

Next, post to the Discussion Board:

  1. How do your carbon and ecological footprint scores compare to the averages for the U.S., China, and Europe?
    • You can find these figures about U.S. averages and European averages by a simple search, or you can use these figures:
      1. “An average American’s carbon footprint exceeds 20 tons, which is an astonishing amount. If the CO2emissions we exhale were made into a solid mass of carbon, we would need 40 trucks – i.e., 1540 tons of carbon, which is 5 times more than a Frenchman and an unimaginable 20 times more than a person that lives in India.” (downloaded 6/2016 from factspy.net (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.)
      2. “The per capita emissions in China increased by 9% in 2011 to reach 7.2 tons per person, only a fraction lower than the EU average of 7.5 tons.” (downloaded 6/2016 from: the guardian.com (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.)
  2. How does your carbon footprint compare to your ecological footprint for the overall score? Do you see a consistent trend, either high or low, in comparison to the U.S. average? Do you see a marked disparity from one of your scores to the other?
  3. Which do you think is a more accurate representation of your energy consumption and greenhouse gas production? Why?
  4. Did you find things that you could do to reduce your scores? What are these things? Do you think you will keep up these efforts in the next few years?
