Class,

Because the children are between the ages of 4-13 it’s best that you look at each child developmental stage and catergorize there level of play by that. Play is an essential, natural part of childhood, important in its own right. Play facilitates healing, coping, mastery, self-expression, creativity, achievement and learning, and is vital to a child’s optimal growth and development. Play is an integral aspect of child life practice with infants, children and youth of all ages (childlife.org). The age group from 4-7 should have a more Symbolic or pretend stage of play. These children may pretend play. Such play constitutes the child’s effort to recreate experiences on a way that can be dealt with, and to repeat past experiences in order to enjoy ot reframe them in acceptable and understandable ways (Thompson, R. H. (2009). Children from the ages of 8-11 also known as school-age child’s play will be more realistic and may have some rules. These children may play board games, card, or computer games. As adolescents and, ultimately, adults move from concrete operations to thinking in formal operations, play’s outward manifestations change and become miniaturized, socialized, and abstracted (Bergen, 1987).

New! WEEK 3 / FORUM 3: THE IMPORTANCE OF PLAY

Courtney Kavanaugh (Jul 19, 2016 9:05 AM) – Read by: 4Mark as ReadReply to This MessageReply

Play is one of the most powerful tools for a child life specialist. Assessing the situation, the ages of the children, their stress levels. and what developmental stage they are at will be key in when providing the appropriate intervention. When children are playing they experience many things, “Play is an arena in a health care setting in which children can exert power and make choices. Adults may control the space and restrict time, but children have the tools of fantasy and imagination. With these tools, play opens a window through which children can process their experiences, present and past, and grasp new meaning” (Thompson, R. H. (2009). As the children enter different developmental stages, their play changes as well.

Children ages two through seven enter the world of make believe play. “Socio-dramatic play for preschoolers often has themes beginning with the simple imitation of adults and moving through intensification of real-life roles, home relationships, expression of physical and emotional needs and forbidden impulses, and the reversal of roles”  (Thompson, R. H. (2009). Some activities that could benefit the this age group would be, putting out dolls, kitchen set, stuffed animals, and have opportunities for the children to express themselves through socio-dramatic play.

For children who are ages seven through thirteen they enjoy play that is more structured and rule orientated. Some activities and games include, “Complementary role games, such as construction projects, puppet shows, word games, and chants, and competitive role games, such as card, board, and computer games as well as organized physical games, become a major component of the play of school-age children” (Thompson, R. H. (2009).

Using these different types of play to accommodate children who are going through this difficult time will help to reduce stress, and worries. It is important to keep in mind that not all children are going to be at the same developmental stages, and each child is unique and different. As a child life specialist it is important to, “match interactions and activities to the developmental level of the child, emotional state, and the individual needs of the child” (Official Documents of the Child Life Council. (2011). Understanding the developmental play stages in children will help these children while they are waiting for their parents. Play has may benefits but it is extremely useful in the hospital setting to help them cope.

You and your team must develop the first proposal to provide as a pilot or model for the other teams. You have to first identify a specific curriculum area not currently used in the school district that would greatly benefit the students in the district. Use the Internet or the Strayer Library as well as your textbook to develop a pilot curriculum for a specific discipline area (reading, math, science, etc.) or grade level (K-12) at a local school district.

Assignment 2: Curriculum Foundations
Due Week 6 and worth 300 points

Refer to the Scenario for Assignments 1-3. Build on the same pilot curriculum you identified in Assignment 1 for this assignment.

Write a six to seven (6-7) page paper in which you:

  1. Summarize the following aspects of Assignment 1:
    1. Describe the specific curriculum area and grade level(s) for the pilot curriculum
    2. Provide four (4) core instructional goals for the curriculum.
  2. Describe the approach to curriculum development (i.e., behavior, systems, humanistic) you will use to shape curriculum design, providing a rationale for your selected approach that is consistent with the core instructional goals of the planned curriculum.
  3. Describe the philosophical / theoretical approach to curriculum development (idealism, realism, etc.) you will use to shape the curriculum design, providing a rationale for your selected philosophy that is consistent with the core instructional goals of the planned curriculum.
  4. Describe the psychological motivational approach to curriculum development you will use to shape the curriculum design, providing a rationale for your selected approach that is consistent with the core instructional goals of the planned curriculum.

Describe how the family in later life plan of action will be implemented. Include specific details, time frame, and the individuals and resources required to implement your plan.

Family in Later Life Plan of Action

Resources

  • Website icon Family in Later Life Plan of Action Scoring Guide.
  • Website icon Microsoft Office Software (tip sheets and tutorials).
  • Website icon APA Style and Format.

As a human service and public service leader, you are now ready for the last step in the multidisciplinary approach: Develop a plan of action based on your recommendations.

Using recommendations you made from the interviews you conducted, what you learned from the Riverbend City family and course materials, and your personal experiences, determine an issue or concern specific to families in later life that you would like to address through a plan of action. Instead of reporting what is wrong or the concerns you have, create a plan of action as a response. Present your plan of action in the form of a PowerPoint presentation, prepared as if you were addressing families in later life or a community organization.

Include the following in your family in later life plan of action presentation:

  • Articulate the objectives of the family in later life plan of action to reflect possible changes addressed in the recommendations you created for your Unit 7 assignment.
  • Describe how the family in later life plan of action will be implemented. Include specific details, time frame, and the individuals and resources required to implement your plan.
  • Address how others may be impacted as a result of implementing your plan of action.
  • Predict how the future may be different if the family in later life plan of action succeeds (for example, major debates, legislative, financial, cultural, and ethical issues that may arise).

Your presentation should be approximately 20–25 slides, including a title slide and a slide listing your references. Support your assignment with specific references in APA format to all resources used in its preparation. Your slides should follow conventions for professional communication, using bullet points for headlines. Use the notes section of each slide for details that would be delivered verbally if you were to actually give the presentation.

Final Project
To complete the following final project, go to this week’s Final Project link in the left navigation.

Assessment Portfolio

Focus of the Final Project:
As you have learned throughout this course, assessments are used for many purposes. As professionals working with children, we must look at assessment as a driving force behind planning instruction, maximizing growth and development, and developing goals for children in our care. We must begin to understand the relationship between how children are assessed and how assessment data is used. This is a multistep process of gathering data, determining goals for instruction, and then implementing those goals into our work with children. For this Final Project, you will develop a partial portfolio for the child you observed, and, with that information, you will develop instructional goals for that child. This assignment has three parts:

Step 1 (5 points): The first part of this assignment requires you to develop a cohesive statement of purpose, which will serve as the introduction to this assignment. Using information gained from all five weeks of this course you will provide an overview of assessment and state how it applies specifically to your future work with children.

Your statement of purpose must include the following:

  • The purpose of assessment.
  • How you will utilize assessment when working with children. Make sure to include how this plan for utilizing assessment aligns with your future work.
  • How you can use assessment to document children’s work.
  • How will you use children’s interests and ideas when assessing.
  • How you will use assessment to differentiate instruction and intervention for children who may have a special need. Refer back to your Week Three Assignment to assist with this.

Step 2 (5 points): The second part of this assignment requires you to create an assessment portfolio for the child you have been working with. It is imperative to maintain the confidentiality of the child you are working with, so make sure to only include the child’s first name. For this assessment portfolio:

  • Describe the child that you are creating this portfolio for. Include, in paragraph form, the information you provided to your instructor in the week 1 learning activity (remember not to include any identifying information about the child (e.g. last name).
  • Observe the child you have been working with using the screening document “Developmental Checklists Birth to Five” from The Early Childhood Direction Center. Make sure to use the appropriate age range for the child.
  • After completing the Developmental Checklists Birth to Five, create a diagnostic activity for the developmental area where the child scored the lowest. Make sure to include a statement explaining the purpose of the assessment.
  • You will also need the information you compiled on this child from the Week Two Observation Assignment. (Be sure to make any changes recommended by your instructor.) This includes both observation forms: Running Record or Anecdotal Record and Time Sampling or Event Sampling forms.

Step 3 (15 points): The final part of this assignment requires you to create developmentally appropriate instructional goals for this child (based on the age of the child you are working with and all of the data you have gathered).

  • 5 points: Create at least three objectives (goals) for each developmental domain: cognitive, physical, social and emotional, and language for a total 12 objectives. If you need assistance with how to create effective learning objectives, please view the Objectives section of the ECE/CD Lesson Planning Handbook that is available with your Constellation materials for the course or review section 7.1 of the course text.
    • Along with each objective, provide a corresponding classroom activity that will be used to help this child reach this objective.
  • 5 points:You will also create a recommendation plan, which you will share with the child’s family, for helping this child to continue with his or her growth and development at home.
    • Summarize how you will communicate with families about the assessments and the information gained from them. Your summary should include how you will connect with the family as well as the type of information you will share with the family. Refer back to your Week One Discussion Two, Week Three Discussion One, Week 4 Discussion One and Week 5 Discussion 2 for ideas to use in your summary.
    • Identify three activities that the families of this child can work on at home. Include instructions for completing each of the activities.
  • 5 points:Discuss the next steps (intervention plans, referral for further evaluation, etc.) that you would take after connecting with the child’s family about their strengths and areas of need. Make sure to explain how these next steps align with the instructional objectives you created.
    • This part of the assignment should be at least a page in length.

Written Expectations

  • Content Development (.5 points): Use appropriate and pertinent content to address ideas within the context of the discipline, shaping the work as a whole.
  • Context and Purpose for Writing (.5 points): Demonstrates application of organization and presentation of content. The writing is should be clear and easy to understand.
  • Assignment Length (.5 points): Your written paper must be at least ten pages (not including title and reference pages); Along with your paper, you must include both observation forms and your title and reference page as one document. Make sure to include a table of contents so that each component of the assignment is easy to locate.
  • Title Page:Inclusion of a separate title page with the following:
    • Title of presentation
    • Student’s name
    • Course name and number
    • Instructor’s name
    • Date submitted
  • Source Requirement (.5 Points): Reference three scholarly sources in addition to the text. All sources included in the reference list must be cited in the portfolio.
  • APA Formatting (.5 Points): Use APA formatting consistently throughout the assignment, which includes citations in the body of the assignment, the title page, and references list as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.
  • Syntax and Mechanics (.5 Points): Display meticulous comprehension and organization of syntax and mechanics, such as spelling and grammar.

Identify any problems you might be having in examining your own culture from an etic perspective or the other culture from an emic perspective.

In this week’s journal entry, you will critically reflect on your own beliefs and biases about your Final Research Paper topic by using the concept of self-reflexivity. Paraphrasing Crapo (2013, sec. 1.3), self-reflexivity is the process of confronting one’s own preconceived notions and examining how these may influence how one understands (or misunderstands) others. Understanding biases and beliefs about other cultures helps researchers apply cultural relativism to their work.

For this journal, consider the sources that you summarized for Part I and Part II of your paper in your “Week Three Assignment Worksheet.”

  • What was your initial response to the sources you read for your paper? Include in-text citations and full reference entries in APA format to all sources you will be using for your Final Research Paper.
  • Can you identify any biases that you might have about the cultural practices you will discuss in either Part I or Part II of your Final Research Paper?
  • Identify any problems you might be having in examining your own culture from an etic perspective or the other culture from an emic perspective. Review Miner’s article Body Ritual Among the Nacirema, and explain how his discussion of Americans (also known as Nacirema) will help you take an outsider’s perspective on your own culture.

The journal entry should be at least 250 words in length. You should also include a title page and a references page.

Depending on the events you have chosen (sports/politics or sports/religion), ensure that there are two opposing viewpoints (similarities and differences) to review.

Write a two-page report summarizing the events and identify the similarities and differences. Below are some possible questions for your essay:

 Who was involved?

 What were the key points/arguments?

 Were these points valid and/or logical?

 How did politics/religion play a role?

 What was the outcome?

What do you think the reading tells us about society in general and social order in particular? What two to three points made by the social theorist did you find most interesting?

Social theories can take years of study to fully grasp, but it is important for Sociology students to have exposure to these important researchers and their pivotal theoretical works. In Section One of Social Theory Re-Wired – “Emergence Through Convergence: the Puzzles of Social Order” – you are offered several classical and contemporary readings. Choose one of the readings in Section One (but not the Introductory Essay) as the basis of your two- to three-page journal paper. (Please note: Do not choose Emile Durkheim’s “Suicide” as this is covered in the Final Paper.) The purpose of the journal paper is to allow you to personally reflect on and present your experience of the reading.

In your journal, reflect on and present the following:

  • What do you think the reading tells us about society in general and social order in particular?
  • What two to three points made by the social theorist did you find most interesting?
  • In your own experience of living in society, can you relate to the points made by the theorist in your chosen reading?
  • How has the reading on the work of this theorist changed your perspective on society?
  • How has the reading enhanced your future experience of society and your study of Sociology?
