HMGT 307 Epidemiology Assignment

HMGT 307 Epidemiology Assignment

Timberline Health, an integrated delivery system serving residents in five counties in eastern Washington, is considering new opportunities to increase community awareness of the organization’s outpatient health services. As the new business development manager of hearing health services, Jack Andrews is responsible for evaluating the feasibility of marketing activities for the hearing service line and must allocate resources to promotional activities that forecast positive return on investment. One option under consideration is to sponsor the health and wellness pavilion at the Spokane County Fair. Research from comparable markets has shown. HMGT 307 Epidemiology Assignment

that wellness fairs are not only effective at educating communities about potential risk factors for health problems, including hearing loss but also increasing consumer awareness of new or existing health services provided by local health organizations. These activities are essential to Timberline Health’s mission within the community.

Since little is known about the hearing status of residents in the market area, Jack enlists the services of his organization’s epidemiologist, Dr. Ruth Litchfield, to help him evaluate the potential return on investment for this marketing campaign. Dr. Litchfield incorporates several factors into her analysis. She reviews public health data on hearing loss, occupational and age distribution data for local residents, as well as a query of Timberline Health’s patient databases. Based on this research, she estimates the prevalence of hearing loss in the five-county service area at 18 percent, slightly higher than the national average (NIH, 2010). Jack receives information from the fair’s sales and marketing department to help in his calculations. Specifically, sponsorship consists of an investment of $50,000 for the design and production of promotional materials and rental of pavilion space for the duration of the twelve day fair. Data from the previous three years shows on average 250,000 people attend the fair, of which 1% visit the wellness pavilion and participate in health screening services. HMGT 307 Epidemiology Assignment

If Timberline Health is to offer mobile hearing screening, the organization must invest in new portable audiology equipment. Jack receives a quotation from his supplier and estimates the total investment in new audiometers and audiometric booths at $16,000. Timberline Health will use existing diagnostic equipment to test people who have failed the initial screening (i.e. test positive for hearing loss), so it is unnecessary to invest in additional equipment for the hearing centers. Vendor specifications for the screening and diagnostic equipment are indicated in Table 1.

Furthermore, Jack calculates that he must provide coverage for three 6-hour shifts per day and each shift must have three audiologists to meet the demand for screening tests. He anticipates hiring nine people to provide coverage for the duration of the fair. The hourly rate for audiologists is. HMGT 307 Epidemiology Assignment

$37.50.

People who fail the initial screening at the fair are referred to an audiologist for a diagnostic test. Jack assumes in his calculations that all people who are referred for diagnostic testing follow up with an audiologist in one of Timberline Health’s hearing centers. Initial screening tests at the fair are free; however, Timberline Health charges $57.00 for a diagnostic hearing test, which costs the organization $24.00. Using past sales data and industry metrics, Jack forecasts that of the total number of people diagnosed with hearing loss at hearing centers only 20% will purchase hearing aids (NIH, 2010). He reviews sales and margin data from the prior year to identify the product mix for his calculations as indicated in Table 2.

Write a Briefing report (no more than 3 pages) meeting the needs of Dr. Litchfield’s request:HMGT 307 Epidemiology Assignment

Dr. Litchfield requests your assistance in conducting a needs assessment for hearing services in the five-county service area. Consider the following in your assessment:

1.   Population demographics play a determining role in the types of health services needed by communities. What demographic data may be important in determining the need for hearing services? (the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders is a good resource)

2.   Timberline Health has a robust electronic health record with strong data analytic capabilities. How might this data be analyzed to evaluate the need for hearing services in the community?

3.   Timberline Health provides a wide array of health services to patients in the community.

Design a screening questionnaire (as an attachment to the report) for use in primary care clinics to help identify community need for hearing services (no more than 5-10 questions using Six Steps Creating Effective Questionnaire). HMGT 307 Epidemiology Assignment

RULE OF THUMB

If a question is worth 10 points, then I’m looking for 10 quality sentences as a minimum. I welcome more discussion as opposed to less, but this rule of thumb seems to get at a minimum that reaches a quality level that I desire.

Also, be sure that you answer all the parts of the question requested. Part A has a lot of parts. Part A and B also require some RESEARCH beyond what I give you in the course shell. Give me the URLs for that part so I know from where you got your information.

Module 4 Assignment (100 possible points)

Name: ______________________________________________________

All assignments are to be completed individually without the assistance of classmates or anyone else. If you have questions, contact the professor who will be glad to help you. By turning in this assignment, you are stating that this work is yours alone.

PART A:  Are they better off? (28 total points)

In this module, through video links, we explore the impact of outsourcing on the people who are hired by US companies to complete the work for much, much lower wages. We watched videos by Jim Keady including the one where he tries to live on Nike wages as workers do.

Now, DO SOME RESEARCH. Repeat, you are expected to do RESEARCH for this question.

Part A, Question 1 (18 possible points) To determine for yourself whether you believe Nike workers in other countries are better off because NIKE is there and provides jobs, RESEARCH and answer THREE of the following questions (6 points each). You must support your answers with RESEARCH and URLs/Sites for that research. You must go beyond the clips and information I provided:

  • What is the cost living in the worker’s country and how do the wages compare with average earnings?
  • Do the workers have to do this work? Why/why not?
  • Does having the US company there have a chilling impact on other home-grown industries?
  • How corrupt is the government there?
  • What is the life of a worker like since the US company came to the worker’s country?
  • What do local people say about the company?
  • What benefits does the US company bring to the local community?

Part A, Question 2 (10 points) Based on your research above, is Keady telling the truth or is he wrong? Are workers making those wages better off?  Conduct research beyond what I provided you to find information on whether workers at a Nike facility of your choice are better off because the US company is doing business there?

Part B: Look at the Board of Directors for Nike (10 total points)

Look at the NIKE corporate board members. Be sure you are looking at the corporate board members and not shareholders and not executive leadership only.

  1. What do you notice about this board in terms of their gender, age and experience they bring to the board? (3 points)
  1. Based on perspectives which are missing, who would you recommend serve on the board and why? (2 points)
  1. How likely is this board to decide to limit CEO pay? Why do you believe that? (2.5 points)
  1. How likely is this board to look closely into the issues that Jim Keady raises? Why do answer that way? (2.5 points)

Part C: Do the Math – Hidden Face of Globalization (20 total points)

As you watch the video of Hidden Face of Globalization, jot down this information:

In the clip at 6:03, it says:

A sewer makes between __11__ cents to _17___ cents an hour or as little as $__5.28________ a week. A sewer can work up to 107 hours a week.

The young girls who remove the string from the garments make __as little as $3.84 a week___.

The corporations have practically wiped out the cost of labor.

Now, do some math (worth 5 points).

  1. For a sewer working 12 hours a day for 7 days of week getting paid 11 cents an hour, it costs a company ______ a week.
  2. Repeat, they are getting 84 hours of labor for __________ a week. (same answer as A)
  3. In the USA, a worker in TN would have to make minimum wage of $________ an hour. (can Google to find)
  4. The first 40 hours of work would cost a company $ __________.
  5. The remaining 44 hours would cost a company $ ____________ (rate of time and half)
  6. Hours x (minimum wage + ½ minimum wage)
  1. In Bangladesh, it costs a company $ ___________ for 84 hours of work. (same answer as A and B)
  2. In USA, it costs a company $_____________ for 84 hours of work. (add D and E together)
  3. A COMPANY OUTSOURCING LABOR TO BANGLEDASH WOULD SAVE HOW MUCH TO DO SO ON ONE WORKER IN COMPARISON TO WHAT IT WOULD COST THEM TO HIRE SOMEONE IN TN TO DO THE WORK AT MINIMUM WAGE.

(G – F = COST SAVINGS TO COMPANY)

So what? (worth 15 points) – Remember the Rule of Thumb (1 point = 1 quality sentence)

  1. Now, what could the Board of Directors decide to do with those cost savings which are magnified for each worker it outsources to a country like Bangladesh? When answering think about the stakeholders (sewers doing work in factories, factory owners, towns where factories are located, customers, employees of the company back home, shareholders). (6 points)
  • What do Board of Directors typically do with all these cost savings? (4 points)
  • What do you believe the ethical action is for a board in using these cost savings? Why do you believe this way? (5 points)

Part D: Board of Directors for your Selected Documentary Company (20 points)

Remember the Rule of Thumb (1 point = 1 quality sentence)

Look at the corporate board members for your selected company or nonprofit you are using in your documentary case analysis. Be sure you are looking at the board members and not shareholders, employees/ executive leadership only, or founders.

  1. What do you notice about this board in terms of their gender, age and experience they bring to the board? (3 points)
  1. Based on perspectives which are missing, who would you recommend serve on the board and why? (2 points)
  1. You will have to RESEARCH to find this answer. What did the board know and/or do with regards to the unethical actions of the company? Did they ignore it? Did they defend the actions? Did they cover it up? (10 points)
  1. Why do you think the board did what it did as you discussed above in question 3? (5 points)

Pa

Part E: Lessons Learned – Advice for the Board of Directors (22 points)

The last part of the Documentary Case Analysis asks you to give advice to the company or organization you focused on to provide guidance to keep the unethical conduct from occurring again.

See the language from the documentary case analysis template:

Lessons for Other Organizations and Leaders

In this section, provide at least THREE lessons you take away from this book or

documentary and paper that you think other organizations and leaders need to realize if they want ethical organizations with ethical people within them.

Of course, provide no less than a paragraph discussion each lesson.

To get you thinking for that last part of the documentary case analysis, think about your advice to the Board of Directors. Give three specific ideas to the Board of Directors on what they should do to have ethical organizations with ethical people within them. You need a total of 22 quality sentences across the three ideas.

  1. Idea 1 for Board of Directors
  2. Idea 2 for Board of Directors
  3. Idea 3 for Board of Directors

The History of Employment Law

The History of Employment Law

Research Paper Template:

  1. Research paper sample templates typically include seven sections:  Title page, Abstract, Introduction, Literature Review (the body of your paper), Conclusion, References, and Appendices.
  2. It’s best to create a Microsoft Word document, using this template so your paper stays organized.  Note that the Title Page, Abstract, References, and Appendices go on their OWN page.  Your paper must be at least 12 pages of written text in 12 point Times New Roman font, excluding your cover page, references, and appendices.
  3. Write your abstract last.  The abstract is a 100 word summary of your paper and is intended to give a quick summary to a reader about the focus of your paper — and so you cannot write that until your paper is complete.  The abstract may include a sentence from your introduction and one from your conclusion, but it should be no more than a paragraph.
  4. To keep your paper organized, you will take each research question and write it as a subheading in your literature review.  For example, if a research question is “How has the implementation of various employment laws impacted the human resource management profession?” the subheading in your literature review could read, “The History of Employment Law.”

    ORDER A PLAGIARISM-FREE PAPER HERE

  5. The conclusion should nicely wrap up your paper in a couple of paragraphs.  It should not be longer than 3 paragraphs (1 page), and should not introduce new material.
  6. Write your reference list first.  Since you are gathering references now, create your list in APA style from the beginning – put it in alphabetical order by author last name – and you will save time later.  There’s nothing worse than having to go back to the library to find the APA required information on a source you could have gathered the first time around!  Note that a reference list is the same as the bibliography or works cited. The History of Employment Law
  7. Some papers may not have an appendix section.  It depends upon your topic.  In most cases, appendices are used to present tables and charts that don’t fit nicely into the text of the paper itself, or to provide a sample of a survey used or interview questions posed.

Reference List:

In order to give appropriate credit to authors, you will follow APA style for this paper.  You should use the current APA manual for details.  Below are a few key points related to your reference list, but The Bedford Handbook provides more detail and examples.

  1. Only include the author’s last name and first name initial.  For example, Micera, R. (2008)
  2. Tab in 5 spaces the second and subsequent line of each reference.
  3. Put in alphabetical order by author last name; if you don’t have an author’s last name, use the first word of the title of the article.  For example, Students Protest over College Admissions Policies (2012, April 15) should be alphabetized under the letter “S”.
  4. If you are using an Internet source, list the reference, followed by the date of retrieval and the website.  For example, Retrieved January 27, 2014 from the Department of Labor website, www.dol.gov.
  5. Your final reference list should include only those references you actually cite in your paper.

2. Propose a strategy to address that issue and explain your reasoning. What do you recommend the company do in this situation to narrow the performance-expectations gap?

3. Identify the focal organization, the public issue under consideration, and the initial strategy recommended for management.

4. Identify the company’s relevant stakeholders with respect to the issue at hand and explain both the interests and salience of each stakeholder. Include no fewer than five stakeholder groups in your analysis (i.e., employees, shareholders, customers, suppliers, retailers, communities, non-governmental organizations, trade associations, governments, the general public, competitors—see Exhibit 1.B in our textbook). Make sure to consider power, legitimacy, and urgency when evaluating salience. Write one small paragraph about each stakeholder group included in your analysis. Remember, you are evaluating the interests of each stakeholder with respect to the strategy you have proposed. In other words, you must evaluate whether each stakeholder is for or against the proposed strategy.

5. Present the findings of your analysis in a stakeholder map. After constructing the stakeholder map, briefly discuss whether any stakeholder coalitions are likely to form.

Consider the following scenario: A company has a number of customers who have addresses and phone numbers, and we assume that while there may be multiple customers with the same address, no two customers with the same name have the same address or the same phone number. Each customer has a customer id, which is unique to that customer. Suppose that this information is stored as a relational database relation or table. Answer the following: a. What is the schema for this relation (the attributes or columns and their domains or types)? b. What are possible superkeys for this relation? c. Which of the superkeys identified above are the candidate keys for the relation? d. What is the best choice from the candidate keys for the primary key of the relation? 2. Consider the previous scenario. Suppose now that the company wants to also build relations that describe its inventory and sales transactions. For the inventory, the store keeps track of the following: ◦ The product manufacturer name ◦ The product model number ◦ The number in stock ◦ The wholesale price ◦ The retail price A manufacturer has many products, each of which has a product number that is unique for that manufacturer. However, two manufacturers could have the same product numbers for some of their products. For the sales transactions, the company tracks the following ◦ The customer id of the customer making the sale ◦ The date of the sale ◦ The product purchased model number ◦ The product purchased manufacturer name ◦ The price paid including tax Assume that a customer makes only one order on any given day. Develop the schemas for each of the above relations, including primary keys and foreign keys, using only attributes representing the information described above. Healthcare is complex and comes with great cost for many people. In time, changes have been proposed to attempt to improve healthcare deficiencies. Although the healthcare system is not perfect, there is always room for quality improvement in healthcare as it is continuously changing. History, current framework and characteristics, healthcare disparities and future solutions are all important factors that impact the constant change in quality improvement in healthcare. Some historical factors include, beliefs and values and the founding of Medicare and Medicaid. Beliefs and values such as capitalism, self-reliance, and limited government have been responsible for shielding the U.S health care system from a major overhaul (Shi & Singh, 2017, p. 54). In addition to beliefs and values having a historical impact, Medicare and Medicaid which was enacted by President Lyndon Johnson (“The Social Security Amendments of 1965 established Medicare and Medicaid in the United States”) (Rajaram & Bilimoria, 2015, pp. 1) has had an enormous impact on the health care system continuously as it effects so many people.
