At some point in every construction project, efforts turn from design and the focus moves to actual construction. With the vision in place and the tools secured, the blueprint can be finalized and approved. Then it is time to put on hardhats and begin work.

Throughout the course you have developed aspects of your Academic and Professional Development Plan. You have put a great deal of thought into your vision and goals, your academic and professional network of support, research strategies and other tools you will need, the integrity of your work, and the value of consulting the work of others. With your portfolio in place, it is now time to finalize your blueprint for success.

Much as builders remain cognizant of the building standards as they plan and begin construction, nurses must remain mindful of the formal standards of practice that govern their specialty. A good understanding of these standards can help ensure that your success plan includes any steps necessary to excel within your chosen specialty.

In this Assignment you will continue developing your Academic Success and Professional Development Plan by developing the final component: a review of your specialty standards of practice. You will also submit your final version of the document, including Parts 1–5.

To Prepare:

  • Review the standards of practice related to your chosen specialty.
  • Download the Nursing Specialty Comparison Matrix.
  • Examine professional organizations related to the specialization you have chosen and identify at least one to focus on for this assignment.
  • Reflect on the thoughts you shared in the Discussion forum regarding your choice of a specialty, any challenges you have encountered in making this choice, and any feedback you have received from colleagues in the Discussion.

The Assignment:
Complete the following items and incorporate them into the final version of your Academic Success and Professional Development Plan.

  • Complete the Nursing Specialty Comparison Matrix comparing at least two nursing specialties, including your selected specialization and second-preferred specialization.
  • Write a 2- to 3-paragraph justification statement identifying your reasons for choosing your MSN specialization. Incorporate feedback you received from colleagues in this week’s Discussion Forum.
  • Identify the professional organization related to the specialization you have chosen to focus on for this assignment and explain how you can become an active member of this organization.

Note: Your final version of the Academic Success and Professional Development Plan should include all components as presented the Academic Success and Professional Development Plan template.

1. According to Fichman, Kohli, & Krisnan (2011), healthcare will benefit from innovative technology and information systems (IS) that can potentially reduce costs and improve outcomes. In the health care field, there are potential medical errors that can happen, which is expensive, increase patient stays, and cost human lives. Therefore, IS can help reduce errors through sensing, controlling, and monitoring. Moreover, there is much critical information that can put at risk, between patients and other parties. For IS to be successful, it has to be asses the extent to which it will achieve expected goals (Calman, Kitson, & Hauser, 2007). Our healthcare system cannot afford to engage in new technologies without weighing the risks and benefits. The expansion of technology needs to have a solid base of evidence that shows the cost and value of IT development (Calman, Kitson, & Hauser, 2007 ). The reason for having electronic health records it to have patients data to be easily accessed by other providers in order to provide the best care.

2. The article is a great read and provides an overview of the role of health information systems and its future implications (Fichman, Kohli, & Krishnan, 2011). It is very important that when potential healthcare risks extend to larger population then the risk of improper resource utilization can put the patient at risk. Therefore, information system should always be developed in conjunction with the idea to support public health policy. The multidisciplinary and team care approach of healthcare needs lesser of the hierarchical structure that exists today. Only through better team based healthcare we can achieve good results (Buljac-Samardzic, Dekker-van Doorn, van Wijngaarden, & van Wijk, 2010; Grumbach & Bodenheimer, 2004; Spence & Reddy, 2011). Evidence based personalized healthcare is the future that may drive consumer to actively participate in healthcare decisions with their caregiver. Thus, access to health information will be a crucial element in the design for future technology(Engelhardt, 2017; Kannampallil et al., 2013) . Case A 

Richard Peterson v Hewlett Packard (HP)

Richard Petersen, a devout Christian, had worked for HP for 21 years in its Boise, Idaho office.  HP is noted for its diversity efforts such as same-sex (and heterosexual) partner benefits and a non-harassment policy that includes sexual orientation, among other things.  As part of its overall workforce diversity campaign, HP began displaying diversity posters.  The posters were photos of HP employees who represented different aspects of diversity (i.e. Black, Hispanic, gay). Peterson objected to the poster that displayed a gay male, an in response to that poster Peterson posted Bible scriptures condemning homosexuality on his cubicle.  The scriptures were written in a sufficiently large type to be seen by his co-workers, customers, and others in the office area. 

Although Peterson’s supervisors allowed him to regularly park his car which had anti-homosexual bumper stickers on it, they demanded that he remove the Bible passages because they were inconsistent with HP’s non-harassment policy. Peterson objected and said that he would remove his scriptures if the “gay” posters were removed because they offended Christian employees.  When he refused any other compromise, management gave Peterson time off with pay to reconsider.  After the paid time off, Peterson returned to work, posted the scriptures again, and was fired.  Peterson when to the EEOC to complain of religious discrimination. 

Case B

Albert Buonnano v AT&T

Albert Buonanno, a devout Catholic, worked for AT&T Broadband in Denver.  Buonnano was described as a model employee, who befriended and helped others, including transgender and gay employees.  As part of AT&T’s diversity program, Buonnano was told that he needed to sign an agreement stating he would  value fellow employees and their behaviors.  Buonnano stated that he could tolerate other religions and love and appreciate other people but could not value homosexuality or other religious beliefs.

When Buonnano was fired for refusing to sign the document, he sued AT&T under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, alleging religious discrimination.  He asked for compensatory damages to cover his lost wages and contributions to his 401K plan, emotional distress, interest, and punitive damages.
