The paper must have the following sections:

• Abstract: brief descriptions      of the goals of the study, the techniques employed, findings, and      recommendations. These must be      brief.
• Introduction (don’t state      title): background, purpose, and relevance of study
• Literature review (don’t state      title)
• Method (Further      discussed on page 2: population, sampling technique (cluster, random,      snowball, convenience), techniques of data collection (survey or      interview), techniques of data analyses (statistical: SPSS, or      qualitative: grounded theory)
• Results
• Discussion
• Limitations and Future research

Content of Final Project

Tasks for the Completion of your Data Collection (These must be completed before you start writing your method, results, discussion, and limitations sections)

· You need three research questions that I have to approve; 

· Submit survey questions that correspond to your approved research questions; Follow the format provided below on page 5. 

· You need at least 30 participants. 

Content for the Discussion of your Method Section

· Population: A brief discussion of the population from which you are selecting your sample.

· Sampling techniques: Detailed description of how you selected your participants.  Do all you can to avoid confusing simple random techniques with convenience sampling.  You will lose points for that.  State the sample size.

· Data collection techniques: Detailed description of how you collected your data.  

· What were the main goals of the study?  Here you discuss your research questions. 

· What techniques did you use to get the data?  Interview, content analyses, or survey?  Here, you might want to state some of the specific survey or interview questions you asked your participants.

· Data analyses techniques: how did you analyze your data?  

· You need to discuss the SPSS and the kinds of tests you run if you conducted quantitative methods.

· if you completed interviews or content analyses from news reports and documents, state that you will be using the grounded theory approach and focus on identifying specific themes and patterns from interviews.  You must state specifically that you digitally recorded the interviews and transcribed them word for word.

How to Integrate your Data into the Results Section

· Organize your results section into sub-sections using your research questions

· For each of the subsections, you need to provide simple descriptive statistical analyses: frequency distributions; measures of central tendencies (Averages: mean, mode, median), and cross-tabulations. Use percentages to describe your table of contents, provide table headers, and be sure to state the questions somewhere in your description of the table content.

· The following are the specific steps

o Run frequencies, measures of central tendencies (mean, mode, median), and crosstabs.

o Generate as many tables, graphs, and charts as possible, and use most of them. 

o Take your time to describe in detail, the contents of each of your tables and charts.  This will help you utilize the important data that you have. 

o Number the tables, and provide your descriptions before or after the tables. In other words, I want you to have your tables in the paper itself, and before or after each one of them, you give the necessary descriptions.  You may label them as Table I, Table II, Table III etc.

o Based on your research questions and the themes that you developed from your literature review, come up with subsections of the analyses and use the same strategy to provide titles for the tables.  In other words, you are to use your variables to develop subsections and titles for the tables, charts, and graphs. 

Content for the Discussion Section

Once you complete the Results section, you move on to the Discussion section.  This section requires that you locate your findings in the literature and discuss your findings.  By locating your findings in the literature, you will have to compare and contrast your findings with what you observed under the literature and evaluate your findings as to whether you sufficiently addressed your research questions.

Limitations and Future Research

· Discuss the technical and scholarly difficulties encountered during this study

· What recommendations do you have for future researchers including yourself

We are often asked to submit portfolios at work and in our professional lives, even when they aren’t called portfolios. For example, when I’m applying for a job, I may be asked for a cover letter, resume, and other supporting documentation. When I’m up for a promotion, I may be asked for a letter of self-evaluation, samples of my best work, and a letter of recommendation. If I am meeting with a client, I may have a binder of examples of my best work to convince them to hire me or to help them articulate what they want.  

For this project, you will practice submitting a portfolio and you will reflect on your best work this semester so far.  

Step 1: 

Pick two examples of correspondence from the following list that you believe are your best work or that you are proudest of: 

• Email: Direct and Indirect Organization Pattern 
• Letter: Writing a Claim Letter
• Memo: Culture’s Impact on Communication
• Project 2: Ethics Email

Make sure to revise these assignments as necessary. Often, even when we choose our best work, we make it even better before including it in a portfolio, based on what we learned since we wrote/created that work. You want these chosen documents to be perfect or nearly perfect in every way. 

Note: Typically, a portfolio would have more than 2 items, but I am lightening the load, due to the short semester. 

Step 2: 

Write a letter of transmittal/letter of reflection. Typically, when we turn in artifacts of our work, we are asked to write a letter to accompany those artifacts: this letter sets the stage for the artifacts and explains them. This is basically what cover letters (which accompany our resume) or personal statements (which accompany school applications) do, too.

You’ll want to write the letter as a letter, with appropriate formatting. Address that letter to me, your instructor, and make sure it’s at least 400 words long. You will write your letter in paragraph form (do not submit one long paragraph, nor a series of bullet points).

Here are the questions that your letter should answer (although you may address then in any order that makes sense to you): 

• What items did you decide to include in your portfolio and why? Was it a tough choice or was it easy to choose which items to include in your story-telling trio? If making selections was hard, explain why. If making selections was easy, explain why.
• You’ve already submitted this work in some version earlier in the semester. The  portfolio is comprised of final versions. What specifically did you change and why? If you didn’t change something, why not?
• What concepts from the semester so far are captured in these assignments? What elements of your own personality or strengths as a writer are captured in these assignments? 
• If the portfolio doesn’t fully capture what you learned this semester so far, what ideas and concepts are not reflected here? 
• Which parts of your portfolio submission make you feel the most proud? Think of some part (or parts) that you worked especially hard on or which feels particularly inspired. Be as specific as you can be. You don’t want my eye to slide past your best bits. Tell me about them.

Do not rush. Look over the work that you will hand in to me. Take some time to think before you begin writing. Your answers matter to me – tell me what happened.

Step 3: 

Place your reflective letter (as page 1) in a document. Then, include your two artifacts, making sure the artifacts appear in the portfolio in the same order they are discussed in your reflective letter. Make sure the formatting of all documents is appropriate and correct (you may have to play with the formatting to make sure all documents look correct). Then save the document to PDF and submit the PDF for a grade (note: in professional communication, whenever formatting is important, saving the document as a PDF helps ensure that the formatting doesn’t change when the recipient opens the document). 

Here’s how you’ll be graded: 

• Does the reflective letter answer all the guiding questions and does the student reflect thoughtfully on what this experience has taught them? (30%)
• Does the student provide detailed examples where appropriate, in order to support major claims in the reflective letter? (20%)
• Does student follow appropriate letter formatting, including a salutation, signature, and paragraph formatting, in the reflective letter? (10%)
• Do the artifacts included in the portfolio support the claims made in the reflective letter? (20%)
• Do the artifacts included in the submission appear to be well written and generally error free (especially in terms of formatting and organization)? Is there evidence of revision by the writer? (15%)
• Are all elements of the portfolio generally well written and free of grammatical errors? (5%)

Assignment Details:

The “Elevator Consult” 

In this activity, you will practice giving a synopsis of your patient to your preceptor. In practice, you may often give this type of report if you are sending a patient for a consultation and your phone the specialist to discuss the patient. This report should be concise and clear. The receiver should, within one minute (slightly less for simple cases, slightly more for complex cases) have a picture of the patient in his/her head. You will report on ONLY items pertaining to the acute problem in this case. Do not include extraneous material or material not directly impacting the decision-making regarding this problem. Remember, this is a FOCUSED visit and assessment to evaluate a focused concern. The history and physical exam applies techniques relevant to the specific complaint for the patient at that visit. Your report should be similarly focused, providing only information that relates specifically to the presenting problem.
