Choose a Research Topic

Choose a research topic related to your program or major ( Educational Studies). This topic will be used for all five weeks so choose one that interests you and for which two scholarly articles, one e-book , and two non-scholarly sources are available. Explore your Topic

Write Your Research Question

Module 5 Assignment: Case Study Analysis

An understanding of the neurological and musculoskeletal systems is a critically important component of disease and disorder diagnosis and treatment. This importance is magnified by the impact that that these two systems can have on each other. A variety of factors and circumstances affecting the emergence and severity of issues in one system can also have a role in the performance of the other.

Effective analysis often requires an understanding that goes beyond these systems and their mutual impact. For example, patient characteristics such as, racial and ethnic variables can play a role.

An understanding of the symptoms of alterations in neurological and musculoskeletal systems is a critical step in diagnosis and treatment. For APRNs this understanding can also help educate patients and guide them through their treatment plans.

In this Assignment, you examine a case study and analyze the symptoms presented. You identify the elements that may be factors in the diagnosis, and you explain the implications to patient health.

This essay will look into the possible patterns that liver blood xu could go into by looking at the relationship between the liver and blood in order to gain a better understanding of this pathology there needs to be an outline of the functions of the liver and its relationship to organs.

A summary of the the liver’s functions could be listed as: the liver stores blood, promotes circulation of blood, by lubricating the vessels and smoothing the flow of qi, it assists in digestion, regulates mental activity, regulates menstruation, opens into the eyes, governs the sinews, extends into the nails and house the hun (the non corporeal soul). These aspects of the liver create many external manifestations that can help diagnose a liver condition. Kaptchuk (2000) states that the nature of the liver is the flowing and spreading in all directions (shu xie), which makes the liver, yang in its function (qi) and yin in substance (blood).(Shanghai University, 2002).

Looking into the relationship between yin and blood, Shi Lin, Zheng Hua and Wiseman (2007) points out that “Yin and blood are of the same source.“(p303) and in inspecting the Huangdi Neijing, “yin forces are peaceful… yin forces support growth” (trans. Kong,
2010:30) the yin relates very closely to the aspects of blood. Rochat de la Valle (2006)

Adds that the functions linked to nourishing, moistening and rebuilding are considered yin, which are also the functions of blood.

An important aspect of the liver is to store blood and the heart governs blood, McDonald and Penner (1994) shows that liver blood xu and heart blood xu to cause each other. In terms of wuxing, this would be a pattern where the mother (liver) is not able to support and nourish the son (heart). (Maciocia, 2005)

One of the functions of the liver is the volume regulation of blood and an aspect of blood in the blood vessels are to fill the vessels. A blood xu would occur if there is an external hemorrhage or consistent chronic disease (for example) , there will be spaces where the blood do not fill up, as Maciocia (2005) points out that when there is less blood, there is space to be “taken up” by wind. He referred this to the strong draughts in underground stations. (p528) As liver blood xu progresses, from the over consumption of blood, the yin gets depleted, this results in the yang to have less support and this is the yang that creates wind within the vessels and this results in liver blood xu generating wind. Due to the nature of blood, which is considered yin, a deficiency of blood would affect the yin of the liver at the same time as blood. If there is a greater consumption of yin and blood, liver blood xu would progress into liver yin xu. (Maciocia, 2005)

The pattern that shows at the same time as liver yin xu would be liver yang rising, as yang qi of the liver is dependant on the nourishment of the yin and blood, where the absence of yin would mean the failure to hold yang which causes the yang to rise as there is no root and is out of control. 1994)

The liver is a yin organ (zang) but has functions which are considered yang where liver blood is very important in supporting the other zang organs and is also important in smoothing the flow of qi throughout the body.

The main organs that are affected are usually the liver itself or the heart that show as both shi and xu pattern, where there would mainly be shi patterns in the yang and qi aspect of the liver and xu patterns in the yin and blood of the liver. A qi xu pattern does not really show due to the abundance of qi in the liver. These patterns will gradually cause extreme conditions in both yin and yang aspects and can ultimately be the cause the separation of yin and yang with the effect on other organs. Welcome to our first research project!

Historic newspapers are vital sources for historians, especially for those interested in the United States since 1877. In fact, newspaper articles have famously been called the “first draft of history.” Yet as we’ve seen, newspapers, like every source, are biased, by which I mean they have a particular point of view. In our analysis of historic newspapers, we will use the SOCC method to critically evaluate newspapers in an effort to understand their biases so we can use the articles to answer significant historical questions. Good news — you’ve been doing this in our history gyms!

The next two weeks are devoted to your first of two “major assignments” you’ll be completing this semester. Together, they are worth 25% of your overall grade — so please give this assignment the time it deserves. You might even consider it your midterm exam. For this project, you will do the work of a historian, conducting research on a topic in a historic newspaper archive and using that research to craft a narrative about a topic you chose. Follow the steps below, and watch the brief ‘how-to’ video (posted below) before starting. 1. Pick a Topic
   • Review Chapter 22: The New Era in the American Yawp(Links to an external site.). It’s the chapter we explored last week about the 1920s.
   • You may pick any event, person, object mentioned in that chapter to explore in this research project. In fact, I suggest you pick 2 or 3 possible topics to explore in the newspaper archive and pick the topic that best lends itself to successfully completing this project.
2. Conduct Research
   • Go to: the UWF Library homepage(Links to an external site.) (if off-campus, be sure to sign-in via the “access” tab)
     • In the “Databases(Links to an external site.)” tab, click: “N” and then “New York Times Historical (1851-2008)”
   • Search your topic  (HINT: limit search publication dates to a specific range. Use context clues from American Yawp add search terms so you can ‘find your topic’ in the NYT). American History 1920s Research Paper.
     • Identify three articles that discuss your topic. (If you cannot find three articles –research another intervention!).
     • Download the PDF of each article. Be sure to include the citation information.

3. Analyze
   • Carefully read the articles you selected. Identify key people, places, and events. The articles you select should provide an overview of the topic you selected. You may need to revisit the NYT archive to find more appropriate article(s).
   • Use the articles (and only the articles) to create a timeline of the intervention. Your timeline should include 8 distinct events.
     • Each event should include all of the following:
       • Specific date, location, individuals/groups involved, and a brief two-to three-sentence description of the event.
       • Use the articles and timeline to draft a 600-to 800-word description of the topic you researched. Do not use outside sources of information.
       • Cite your newspaper articles using footnotes, refer to the posted example for formatting requirements (Chicago).

4. PRESENT
   • Effective presentation of research is essential to the work of historians. Include these items in the listed order for success:
   • Essential Information: name; course; date; instructor; assignment name

   • Include your 600-to 800-word description. Make sure it is free of grammatical errors. Read it out loud before submitting: if it doesn’t make sense to you/your roommate, then you should probably revise it.
   • Include your chronological timeline. Follow this format and cite your newspaper articles using footnotes, refer to the posted example for formatting requirements (Chicago).
   • To create a footnote, put the cursor where you want the footnote to go (right after the period in a sentence –see model). Click the “References” dropdown menu in Word. Then click “Insert Footnote.” Type in your citation.
   • Use 12-point font; one-inch margins; single-space (include blank line between paragraphs/time-line entries)
   • Append your three documents to your work. Make sure citation information is visible for each article.
   • Save your project as one PDF or word document, using the following file-naming convention: LastName_NYTproject. For example: Wells_NYTproject.pdf.
