Strengths and Limitations of Correlational Design

Strengths and Limitations of Correlational Design

ORDER NOW FOR CUSTOMIZED AND ORIGINAL ESSAY PAPERS

Correlational designs have been used in all areas of research. Forensic psychology research is no exception. As you have seen from your readings, many phenomena do not lend themselves to true experimental design. For example, an experimental research study that looks at the effect of viewing violent content, either on television or in video games, would be more challenging, both practically and ethically, than a similar study using a correlational design. Correlational research designs allow researchers to study behavior as it occurs naturally. However, to do so probably would compromise the ability to draw cause-and-effect conclusions.

To prepare for this assignment:

  • Review Chapter 9 in your course text, Research Methods for the Behavioral Sciences. Consider the strengths and limitations of using correlational data, in general, and as it relates to research in forensic psychology or in forensic settings.
  • Review the article, “Forensic Psychology: An Empirical Review of Experimental Research.” Focus on the strengths and limitations of empirical and correlational design.
  • Using the Walden Library, select and review two research articles covering different topic areas, both of which use a correlational design.
  • Think about the strengths and limitations of the correlational design used in each of the two research articles you chose.

The assignment (3 pages):

  • Briefly describe each of the studies in the two research articles you selected. Include a description of the results of the studies and the correlational relationship reported.
  • Explain the strengths and limitations of using a correlational design in each of the studies.

You must proofread your paper. But do not strictly rely on your computer’s spell-checker and grammar-checker; failure to do so indicates a lack of effort on your part and you can expect your grade to suffer accordingly. Papers with numerous misspelled words and grammatical mistakes will be penalized. Read over your paper – in silence and then aloud – before handing it in and make corrections as necessary. Often it is advantageous to have a friend proofread your paper for obvious errors. Handwritten corrections are preferable to uncorrected mistakes.

Use a standard 10 to 12 point (10 to 12 characters per inch) typeface. Smaller or compressed type and papers with small margins or single-spacing are hard to read. It is better to let your essay run over the recommended number of pages than to try to compress it into fewer pages.

Likewise, large type, large margins, large indentations, triple-spacing, increased leading (space between lines), increased kerning (space between letters), and any other such attempts at “padding” to increase the length of a paper are unacceptable, wasteful of trees, and will not fool your professor.

The paper must be neatly formatted, double-spaced with a one-inch margin on the top, bottom, and sides of each page. When submitting hard copy, be sure to use white paper and print out using dark ink. If it is hard to read your essay, it will also be hard to follow your argument.

Group work is a commonly used method within school settings. Because peer interaction is important in the emotional and social development of children, the task group can serve as a wonderful therapeutic setting and tool; however, many factors should be considered when implementing this type of intervention.

For this Discussion, read the Van Velsor (2009) article.

Post your understanding of task groups as an intervention for children. Use the model for effective problem solving to compare and contrast (how to identify the problem, develop goals, collect data). How does this model differ from a traditional treatment group? What are the advantages and possible disadvantages of this model? Describe how you might use this model for adults. What populations would most benefit from this model?

Respond to a colleague by suggesting other advantages or disadvantages of the model for effective problem solving. This will be provided:

DDBA8161 Research Evaluation and Strategic Implementation Paper

To prepare for this Assignment, review the readings on tools for strategic change such as those described in Chapter 12 of Dyer, Godfrey, Jensen, and Bryce (2016) and choose one reading for further examination. Consider how the context of a specific organization (industry, geographical location, status within industry, etc.) can influence both the choice and the implementation of your selected tool, as well as how the application of a tool might vary among different business leaders and practitioners. Be sure to utilize scholarly, peer-reviewed resources from the Walden Library to identify additional supportive examples of organizations applying the tools and principles of strategic planning and their results.

Submit a 3- to 5-page evaluation of your research on a specific tool for strategic implementation. Your evaluation should include the following:

  • A brief description of your chosen tool, including relevant background, an APA-cited scholarly illustration, and detailed rationale for your choice
  • An assessment of how your chosen tool is affected by different strategic influences (such as environmental factors; internal, organizational considerations; etc.) and whether these changes impact your choice for implementation. Include at least one supportive example.
  • An explanation of the usefulness of your chosen tool to you as a practitioner and independent scholar, including how it will benefit your strategic business leadership. Be sure to provide supportive scholarly examples.

Please Note: For each page of your paper, you must include a minimum of two APA-formatted scholarly citations. In addition, you must include at least one appropriately cited APA figure or table in your paper.

Part 1

Use SPSS to answer the research question you constructed. Then, compose a 1- to 2-paragraph analysis in APA format in which you answer the following questions:

  • What is the null hypothesis for your question?
  • What research design(s) would align with this question?
  • What dependent variable was used and how is it measured?
  • What independent variable is used and how is it measured?
  • If you found significance, what is the strength of the effect?
  • What is the answer to your research question?
  • What are the possible implications of social change?

Be sure to include your data output with your analysis. See pages 533 and 534 in your Warner textbook for an excellent APA-compliant write-up of a factorial analysis of variance.

Part 2

The Assignment

Write a 2- to 3-page critique of the research you found in the Walden Library that includes responses to the following prompts:

  • Why did the authors select factorial ANOVA in the research?
  • Do you think this test was the most appropriate choice? Why or why not?
  • Did the authors display the results in a figure or table?
  • Does the results table stand alone? In other words, are you able to interpret the study from it? Why or why not?

You have reached a milestone in your study of biological psychology, having examined the fundamentals of how the brain is structured, how each individual neuron uses electrical signals to process information, and how the neuron in turn releases chemical neurotransmitters to affect other neurons and, ultimately, to produce behavior. Using this framework of knowledge, step back and consider the big picture of the behavioral issues of concern for psychologists, and which aspects of brain structure and function play important roles in those behaviors.

The Assignment:

Write a 4- to 5-page paper that addresses the following:

  • Describe the divisions of the brain that research psychologists are most interested in and explain why.
  • Describe what divisions of the brain you might be interested in researching and explain why.

Support your Assignment with specific references to all resources used in its preparation. You are to provide a reference list for all resources, including those in the Learning Resources for this course.
