Directions and Tips for Writing Personal Philosophy of Nursing Paper

Directions:

1. Write your personal philosophy of nursing.

  • Your philosophy should clearly delineate what you believe underlies, guides, and influences your practice.
  • Major elements (concepts) should be identified and included as headings in your paper. Personal Philosophy of Nursing Discussion
  • Provide examples to explain how these elements influence or guide your nursing practice.
  • This paper is not a story of why you became a nurse. Instead it should be a focus of what guides you as a practitioner and drives your practice.
  • You may use concepts such as caring, patient education, patient outcomes, or use ideas from nursing theories such as Orem’s Theory of Self Care, Watson’s Theory of Caring, Newman’s Systems Theory, Rogers Theory of Unitary Man. There are many other concepts you could base your philosophy on, those mentioned here are just a few examples.
  • References should be professional journals and books.
    • Do not use Wikipedia or dictionaries as references.
    • Do not use the Bible as a reference.
  • The paper is to be a scholarly presentation using APA format and be no longer than 5 double‐spaced pages, not including Title and Reference pages.

2. Writing a formal paper is a process of critical thinking because it requires one to analyze, conceptualize, and clearly present the material.

  • This paper should not be a creative exposition. Your writing for this paper should be simple, clear, and straightforward. Avoid metaphors, rhetorical questions, florid or poetic language.
  • Avoid trying to sound “intellectual.” When complex terms or extra words are used, it usually sounds artificial and contrived (forced, phony). Avoid terms such as “utilize,” the word “use” is simpler and conveys the same meaning.
  • What drives or underlies your practice?
  • How is a person’s philosophy used in making choices?
  • How does a person’s philosophy affect his/her own practice of nursing?
  • What are the major components of the philosophy of nursing at your work/institution?
  • What is the impact of the institution’s mission and purposes and/or philosophy of nursing on the practice of nursing where you work?
  • Does the profession’s (or an organization’s) philosophy affect the standards of nursing care? If so, how? If not, why?
  • What are the ANA Standards of Clinical Nursing Practice? What are the values underlying the Standards?
  • What nursing theories might exemplify your personal philosophy? Although you are not required to reference a nursing theory, sometimes students will do this to support their ideas.
  • Personal goals are different than a personal nursing philosophy (i.e., don’t make any med errors is a goal, not a philosophy).
  • Title Page: The title page should include a page number, the paper’s title, your name, course number (NURS 4103).
  • An abstract is not expected.
  • Introduction:

Following are some questions you may want to think about before writing your paper. These are not headings or items you need to include in your paper, but they may be food for thought in developing your paper. However, you certainly may include any of these ideas to support your views.

The paper should include the following parts:

  • The introduction should be kept to 1‐2 short paragraphs.
  • A good introduction includes the topic and why and how it will be addressed.
  • The introduction should briefly and broadly address the main concepts of your paper, then the body will discuss these elements in a bit more detail.
  • Last sentence stating the specific concepts that you will be addressing in your paper (3‐4 concepts).
  • Per APA guidelines, the introduction does not have a heading.
  • Body of the Paper:
    • The body of the paper is the logical development of your subject (philosophy).
    • You are required to use headings to organize the paper. These headings (or the major concepts they address) should be identified in your introduction. Typically, you should have 3‐4 headings (could be more or less, but should always include some headings).
    • Use headings that identify the 3‐4 concepts identified in your introduction last sentence.
    • Each heading should be followed by 1‐3 paragraphs expounding on the heading topic.
    • Address one idea per sentence. Connect ideas within a paragraph.
  • Summary:
    • This is a summary of the major points you made in the paper.
    • Restate broadly what you addressed in your paper. You should not have new information or references in your summary, but you may sum it all up with a final new sentence that encompasses everything.
  • References:
    • Should be on a separate page.
    • Arranged alphabetically by the author’s last name.
    • All references on the reference page must be cited within the body of the paper.
    • All references in‐text (in the body of your paper) should be on your reference list.
    • Refer to APA resources for correct in‐text citations and reference page format. Personal Philosophy of Nursing Discussion
  • Use simplest terms possible (i.e., “use” instead of “utilize”). Using more sophisticated or complex terms makes a paper more difficult to read and DOES NOT make the paper appear more intellectual.
  • Write simple, clear, unambiguous sentences. Avoid pretense. Writing should be plain, simple, straightforward and open. Don’t try to be “scholarly” or “intellectual.”
  • Use active voice and not passive voice
  • It is okay to use more first person voice for this paper. In fact, I would expect to see a lot of …I believe….or…my beliefs…. or similar. When you make broad statements, either state that they are your thoughts/ideas, or you need to reference them.
  • Refer to Purdue Owl writing center for help
  • If needed, contact the GSU Writing Center for feedback on your writing before you submit papers
  • Remember that your discipline is nursing, not medicine. Although both of these disciplines are part of healthcare, and there is some overlap, nursing is a distinct profession. Therefore, please avoid referring to nursing or nurses as part of the “medical” profession, and instead use the term nursing profession or healthcare. Additional Considerations for Writing Your Philosophy Paper That You May Find Helpful

Some grammar and writing tips:

A couple of other general considerations:

  • Although it is fine to discuss that your faith/religion has had an impact on you, please do not focus your personal nursing philosophy solely around this. I completely understand that your beliefs underlie the foundations of moral behavior, but focus on what specifically influences your broader nursing behaviors. Personal Philosophy of Nursing Discussion

Very rough paper example

Below is a very rough example of ideas or thoughts that I might include in a philosophy of nursing paper. This example is just some quick ideas I came up with, which might give you ideas of how to approach your philosophy paper. This is by no means what you have to follow, and understand that this example is NOT formatted correctly, it is just ideas placed under potential headings.

Personal Philosophy of Nursing Reflection

I believe that a primary part of nursing is developing a caring relationship with patients. Within Watson’s Theory of Caring (Year), developing trust, being altruistic, being sensitive and nurturing are concepts that apply to my personal view of a caring relationship. A second major part of my nursing philosophy beliefs is critical decision making. This process is important in making accurate decisions about patient care and keeping patient’s safe (or protecting patients from injury). My third major concept (idea) of nursing is teaching. I believe teaching is essential to help patients (individuals, groups or communities) care for themselves. In this paper I will discuss these three major components of my nursing philosophy, caring, critical decision making and teaching.

Caring

I might elaborate more on Watson’s theory, and on the components of caring and/or developing relationships with patients. Would give specific examples from my personal practice. Also, could use the components of the theory as subheadings if that helped clarify (i.e., a specific example for each component‐not required‐just ideas)

Critical Decision Making

Might define concept based on ANA or other source (i.e., specialty organizations, IOM, ACA), might elaborate on why/how process supports accurate care and safety, might relate to my institutions mission or framework or vision, and then give specific examples of how I use in my practice. Might include information on evidence based practice. Would give examples in my practice.

Teaching

Might define what teaching is (from text or other professional sources) and what types occur across nursing. Might relate to a specific theory such as Orem’s theory of self‐care or a health promotion theory or framework. Would give examples in my practice.

Summary

Might start out with ….Caring relationships, critical decision making and teaching are essential components of my personal nursing philosophy…then restate in a few sentences what these mean to you).

Architect Daniel Libeskind is credited with saying “To provide meaningful architecture is not to parody history, but to articulate it.” The suggestion is that his work does not copy the efforts of others but relies on it.

Understanding the work of others is critically important to new work. Contributions to the nursing body of knowledge can happen when you are able to analyze and articulate the efforts of previous research. The Medical Director of the facility where I work is a Psychiatrist, I have been to a few conferences where he was a speaker. He is a great resource; I have saved the PowerPoints he presented. In the conferences, I able to collect resources and network with professionals that I will be able to contact as I see the need. I remember thinking, what great opportunity I will have going forward already hearing these professionals speak. Psychiatric NP students have a great advantage when it comes to preceptorship, being there are a lot of smaller agencies that are able to help. With the large medical organizations, it can be more difficult to get approved to preceptor with their providers, due to so many policies and administration being involved. NURS-6003N: Transition to Graduate Study 2020

With networking in my area, I plan to note what I like about each agency and what I dislike due to being able to think ahead on where I will want to work upon completing my program. Preceptorship has many benefits, reality-based knowledge, skill acquisition, confidence, and professional socialization but also preceptor-preceptee relationship/friendship are formed which can lead to a starting position in your career for this degree. (Exploring the Intrinsic Benefits of Nursing Preceptorship: a Personal Perspective, 2018). NURS-6003N: Transition to Graduate Study 2020

I noticed on Facebook, some students are listing their academic advisor as a resource. As for now, I do not understand this. In the past, my academic advisor for my BSN was a great resource in the beginning stages of my classes starting the program. Currently, I have not used my advisor, but after watching the video, it appears my academic advisor can have a large impact on my success in this program and possibly my career going forward (Module 2 (Weeks 2-3): Academic and Professional Strategies and Resources, 2018). I will be keeping this information in my toolbox.

In the student orientation, I learned that the grade book can be used more than just learning what your grade is. If you go to grade, it will also tell you what is due, when and you if you click on the assignment that is not submitted, it will bring you to the assignment (Module: Your Master’s Experience at Walden University, n.d.). This is a second way to find out what is coming up. The calendar is also another way to keep track of what is due. The calendar is color-coded for each class, on the left side of the screen, you can uncheck a class so what shows on the calendar is only for a specific class.

RESPOND TO STUDENT # 2 Below

The first week of Walden University’s online program to obtain my MSN was a little challenging for me. I was one of the students that at first drastically under estimated the work that I would have to put in to complete an online program. The result was me withdrawling from one of my two classes due to poor time manangement skills. I was overwhelmed.

Once i got over the first week and began to do assignments I felt a little rusty. Its ironic because I have only been out of school for six years. I was finding it hard to save my work and submit it. I actually had a learning curve with the word document on my laptop because i am so accustomed to Microsoft Word. Being a millennial and having worked with computers since I was seven I could not believe the difficultly I was having. As Kaufman (2015) had stated online education offers convenience and flexibilty. I began to think this convenience would be my down fall as I tend to procrastinate.

As I continued with this week’s readings, I felt much more confident. The article “10 traits of successful online learners” was the article I found most encouraging because I felt that each of the tips were qualities I have within myself. Since beginning this program my love for nursing education has sky-rocketed again. Interest in learning and adaptability were noted in this article as traits a successful online learner possess. Then the article state to remember why you are here and to keep that goal close.

I enrolled in the nurse practitioner program after going back and forth between Nurse Practitioner and Nurse Informaticist. Truth is, I am a people person and I love being hands on in the nursing field. I wanted to advance my degree however, I didn’t want to remove myself from the patient too much.

My Questions/ Concerns

1) I had know idea there were voices to APA. As if APA wasn’t challenging enough now I’ve learned of active vs passive voice. Emphasis has been placed on active voice as it makes writing clear. ( Walden Writing Center, 2018)

2) I feel like I used study groups a lot to complete my undergraduate degree. 10 Tips for Being a Successful Online Learner suggest that we be open-minded and adaptable. Would anyone be willing to study via zoom meetings as we advance further in to the program? I’m going into this program alone and studying became a concern for me.

3) I didn’t realize landing a preceptor could be a challenge. I will work on finding one now. Thanks for the heads up colleagues.

4) I did not realize the importance of staying in touch with my academic advisor until I watched the Walden video. I will be sure to reach out to him.

5) Lastly, I am concerned about graduating and cost. Both of which i try not to think too much about. I am going to give this program my all and I am confident that I will complete the program. Persistence will get us all through!

In Module 1, you began building a foundation for your success by considering a network-individuals and teams who can help you to clarify and execute on the vision. A network is most helpful when you are comfortable asking questions. Chances are other members of your network have experienced similar questions and may have helped guide others toward resolutions that can now be helpful.

In this Discussion, focus on the questions you are ready to ask as your journey begins. Keep in mind that sharing questions is often a great way to help others who have similar questions even if they do not realize it!

To prepare:

  • Reflect on questions or concerns you might have as you begin the MSN program.
  • Consider the individuals, teams, and departments you previously considered in Module 1 as well as how they may provide support with addressing these questions and concerns.

Sponsorship Article Summary

“Heineken agrees deal to sponsor Euro 2020 and renews champions league partnership” was written by James Ayles on November 13, 2019 and was published on Forbes’ online database.  This article explains that the well-known beer company, Heineken, is the new official sponsor of UEFA Euro 2020. According to the editors of Encyclopaedia Britannica, UEFA Euro is the Union of European Football Association’s European football championship and it takes place every four years. This is an awesome opportunity for Heineken because the tournament is watched all over the world. “Included in the sponsorship, Heineken will have pouring rights at stadiums, in fan zones, and villages, LED pitch-side branding exposure, digital rights, man of the match presentations, and ticket giveaways” (Ayles, 2019). In addition, Thierry Henry, European Championship winner, will become their ambassador for the tournament. They believe Henry will have a great presence on social media and engage with the fans (Ayles, 2019). With the help of the sponsorship and ambassador, Heineken will attract more customers.

Analysis

A sponsorship involves paying a fee to have your name associated with different things. This can include: a venue, apparel, an event, a cause, and much more (Principles of Marketing, 2015). I think Heineken sponsoring a sporting event is an excellent idea because many people drink beer while watching sports and it reaches a specific target market. Nine benefits of sponsorships are (Friedman, 2019):

  1. Shape consumer attitudes
  2. Build brand awareness
  3. Drive sales
  4. Increase reach
  5. Generate media exposure
  6. Differentiates yourself from competitors
  7. Take on a “corporate citizen” role
  8. Generate new leads
  9. Enhance business, consumer, and VIP relationships

This article proves that even huge, well-known companies need to stay present in the industry and continue to market their products. Sponsorships are a great way to refresh consumers on the business’ existence, a new product or a new brand. For example, the Heineken name will be at every single game of the tournament, every single concession stand and all over each stadium. Consumers will be forced to see their name and the beer they sell. That image will stick in the consumers’ mind even after the event, when they are at the grocery store or want to try something new. I think this sponsorship will be very successful for Heineken because of how popular this sporting event is and the global reach they will obtain.  Over two billion people watched the 2016 championship on television (ESPN, 2016). That is just the championship alone, that does not include all the other games before that. I would assume the turn out for the 2020 event will increase and event itself will have more attendants. Overall, I think this is a fantastic move for Heineken and I believe will have an amazing return on investment.

This may be done individually or as a small group. The final deliverables will include: a report shared with the class (presentation of 15-20 min., Prezi, Padlet, etc.) with an outline and annotated bibliography and a final portfolio of the project which includes: • An abstract • annotated bibliography identifying key resources • outline of the report, • and other supporting documentation as appropriate. • If the project is done by a group, a statement of authorship is included to the instructor. At least ten professional sources will be utilized which should include the text(s). These must be appropriate for the audience. You will utilize additional evidence-based practice sources, being careful to cite your resources. • Include one objective from Healthy People 2030 in the program plan. • Finally, consider briefly how you will evaluate progress toward the Outcomes (and, therefore, Goal). Again, utilize the model you have chosen. The student will develop and post to the Discussion Board a brief discussion (20 minutes maximum) regarding their work. This may be done via Powerpoint with audio, Youtube, Panopto, Padlet, Prezi or something similar. Instructor Feedback. There are several instructor ‘feedback’ opportunities during the course to assure students are ‘on track’ with the project. These are optional, but each submission is worth 5 points. The instructor will review/comment on DRAFTS submitted to the designated dropbox via track changes. Feedback will focus on content, rather than ‘edits’. Only ONE review will be done with each submission and times for Zoom or Phone discussion are also available. About a week is required to complete the reviews. The review schedule is: Week #3: Topic, audience/group, HP or DP, HP 2023 Week #5: Analysis of health issues; Primary, secondary prevention; Health promotion? ; behavior change model? Ethical aspects? Week #7: Health promotion programming and behavior change model; Week #8: Draft Goal & 2 Outcomes; Interventions; Thoughts about ‘evaluation’ To summarize, this project includes: • Project development and presentation of the project to Discussion Board (20 points on content; 5 points on presentation) • Portfolio of supplementary material to the instructor (10 points).

Specifically, the student(s) will: • Identify a group or population and suggest either a health promotion or disease prevention topic to address. • Analyze briefly the health issues of the group/ population. This may include health promotion, primary, or secondary prevention issues. Consider the situation/context and any ethical perspectives that may apply. • Suggest health promotion programming to meet one population need. • A health promotion or disease prevention behavior change model (e.g. Transtheoretical model, Health belief model, Pender’s Health Promotion model) • Identify and describe briefly the model in your discussion and portfolio. • The plan will include at least one Goal with at least two measurable Outcomes. • The outcomes will lead to your suggested nursing actions/interventions. NURS 610 Health Education Interventions Discussion
