English MIDTERM EXAM – nursing homework essays

Choose ONE essay question below and write your answer directly inline.

Strategies:
Reread the question three times.
Take notes, free write.
Write an introduction that has a thesis.
For example: An important theme in both Toni Morrisons The Bluest Eye and in Martin Luther Kings Letter from a Birmingham Jail is the fall from innocence that characters, and particularly children, experience when confronted with the real world. Both authors suggest that this fall can have dire consequences.

Make an outline for your essay (you do not submit this– just the essay)
Your essay should have a clear thesis.
Paraphrase the quote if one is provided.
Discuss the photograph attached.
Show knowledge of the texts we have read so far this term.
Use concrete examples.
Answer the question completely. I won’t be counting paragraphs, but I would expect your answer to be a minimum of 3.5 pages.
Proofread your work.

1.         In Toni Morrisons The Bluest Eye, Claudia recalls:

   Our astonishment was short-lived, for it gave way to a curious kind of defensive shame; we were embarrassed for Pecola, hurt for her, and finally we just felt sorry for her. Our sorrow drove out all thoughts of the new bicycle. And I believe our sorrow was the more intense because nobody else seemed to share it. . . . So it was with confidence, strengthened by pity and pride, that we decided to change the course of events and alter a human life.
            What we gone do, Frieda?
            What can we do? Miss Johnson said it would be a miracle if it lived.
            So lets make it a miracle. (191)

How are children more vulnerable to the harsh realities of an environment that does not nurture them and what, do the authors suggest, are the consequences of a childs fall from innocence? Please answer using ANY of the texts we have discussed this term. Establish the fall from innocence by showing examples from the text of plot points or motifs (like the staining of the dresses and of Chollys pants) at the moments when they lose their innocence. Once you have discussed the texts, you can show how any of the attached photographs or paintings illustrates this theme. Please click on the linlk below to see the painings in the question.
OR:
2.   In The Bluest Eye, the narrator tells us that:

Mrs. Breedloves skin glowed like taffeta in the reflection of white porcelain, white woodwork, polished cabinets, and brilliant copperware. (108) . . . She became what is known as an ideal servant, for such a role filled practically all of her needs. When she bathed the little Fisher girl, it was in a porcelain tub with silvery taps running infinite quantities of hot, clear water. She dried her in fluffy white towels and put her in cuddly night clothes. Then she brushed the yellow hair, enjoying the roll and slip of it between her fingers. No zinc tub, no buckets of stove-heated water, no flaky, stiff, grayish towels washed in a kitchen sink, dried in a dusty backyard, no tangled black puffs of rough wool to comb. (127)

Parenting is a significant theme in The Bluest Eye and in Imitation of Life, (as well as in the brief clip of the Shirley Temple film, The Littlest Rebel we saw). Repeatedly, we have seen that the way a child looks (his or her physical characteristics) can affect the way adults respond to that child. Please discuss the quote and Benetton ads below, and include other examples from any texts or films we have read this term that speak to the quote and support your thesis.

Observational Study Selection and Review – nursing homework essays

Use SNHU’s Psychology Resource Guide for Undergraduate and Graduate Students, you will search for and select a journal article which uses observation in the methodological design. Use either the PsycARTICLES or PsycINFO database, select “Advanced Search,”, and then one of the options that will appear is “Methodology.” You can use this to narrow down your search to only those options which are likely to be observational such as qualitative. If you use the qualitative methodology limiter, in the search boxes type in a keyword or two describing the topic of the research you are interested in reading. You may even add in the keyword observation OR observational to capture that word being used in the abstract. Make sure to read through the article to determine if an observational method is used.
Using the article you select, answer the questions in the Observational Study Worksheet. A narrative format is not required. Your answers should be embedded directly into the worksheet; you do not need to create a new document.
For additional details, please refer to the Module Three Worksheet Guidelines and Rubric document.

Flow/Radical Remission Essay Assignment – nursing homework essays

 In her chapter “Having Strong Reasons for Living” in Radical Remission, Kelly Turner writes: “In order to be excited about living, people often need to get in touch with (or get back in touch with) their deepest desires or callings. For many people, this third aspect of ‘having strong reasons for living’ means adding creativity back into their lives because creativity is something that, unfortunately, most adults have lost touch with. For example, many people’s jobs do not provide them with much of a creative outlet,” (260).
     However, Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi in Flow says that if people really focus on what they are doing and follow the rules for flow, they can do ANY activity and find joy in it, from washing dishes, to playing a musical instrument, to reciting poetry, inventing a theorem, or exercising. The elements of Flow are the following:
The 8 Characteristics of Flow
Csikszentmihalyi describes eight characteristics of flow:

Complete concentration on the task;
Clarity of goals and reward in mind and immediate feedback;
Transformation of time (speeding up/slowing down);
The experience is intrinsically rewarding;
Effortlessness and ease;
There is a balance between challenge and skills;
Actions and awareness are merged, losing self-conscious rumination;
There is a feeling of control over the task.

Perhaps both authors are correct. You must pursue activities in a “flow” state for maximum enjoyment, but the activities can bring even more joy if they are something that you feel called to do and that fit in with your values and life meaning.
Impressionist painter Henri Matisse posited that creativity takes courage. I would like you to embrace that spirit as you undertake your final projects. Choose something that delights and inspires you in a domain in which you have something to share and something to learn. Make it a real research project where you do not already know the outcome before you start.
Remember to use the four kinds of evidence: Personal experience, data and statistics, expert opinion, values. Alternate between direct quotes and paraphrase of your research, and cite your sources. Also, use one of the introduction strategies from the Introduction chapter in The West Guide.
       TOPIC:
Write a 4- page research paper on creativity in your own life. What activities give you flow?  Discuss any obstacles you may have faced in pursuing your goals. What creative qualities did you demonstrate as you faced your challenges? What did you learn? How did you use a creative approach to overcoming the obstacle? Relate your story to at least one of the strategies in Radical Remission. If you failed, how did that experience shape you or lead you in a new direction? Use the Reisman creativity terminology we have learned in class such as tolerance for risk, or flexibility, etc. (Use research to give context to your goals or struggles).

Legal Memo – nursing homework essays

Assume that you are working at a small personal injury firm in Birmingham, Alabama as a solo attorney and a client named Jimmy Varney, who is an online college professor, walks into your office on June 28, 2017, and tells you the following story:
In May 2016, Mr. Varney traveled to New York to visit his father with his wife and daughter.  While Mr. Varney checked his work emails in the family’s hotel room in a no-frills motel, his wife and daughter went down to the pool to waste some time before dinner.  As his wife and daughter attempted to leave the pool area and head in the direction of the elevator, Mr. Varney’s daughter, who was five years old at the time, saw an elderly couple entering the pool area with a Boston Terrier dog wearing a red “service dog” vest.  Because the Varney family owns a Boston Terrier and because his daughter had never seen a Boston Terrier “service dog,” Mr. Varney’s daughter bent down to pet the dog.  At the same time, the dog’s owners tried to tell my daughter not to pet their dog because he was vicious. As Mr. Varney’s daughter leaned down, the dog took a bite of her face.  The bite resulted in the need for plastic surgery and now is now deadly afraid of dogs.  Mr. Varney later learned that the elderly couple never had the dog trained as a service dog.  Instead, the elderly couple, who both suffer from recognized disabilities, purchased the red “service dog” vest from the internet.  Mr. Varney asks if he can sue the hotel or the elderly couple for his daughter’s injuries.
The material above in italics are your notes of the story that Mr. Varney told you. For purposes of this assignment, assume that you are a member of the New York State Bar, but that you do a majority of your legal work in Alabama. Because you are not familiar with New York law on the various issues raised by this situation, you need to do some legal research on the legal issues raised by Jimmy Varney’s situation.
Using Nexis Uni, please locate any applicable New York law that may govern Mr. Varney’s situation.  Specifically, please locate any applicable New York statutes as well as several New York cases that have interpreted the applicable New York statutes.  After you conduct your research, please submit your findings in a memo of no more than 1000 words.   Make sure that you address whether Mr. Varney could sue the elderly couple or the hotel and if he sues them what the likely defenses that each party may raise.  Please also note any additional facts that you may need to research to assess the merits of Mr. Varney’s potential claims.
