Aims

There has been a dramatic reconception of the nature of organisations in the last decade, with a new focus on the central role of relationships within and beyond organisational borders. In part this has been an extension of the notion of the value chain, with detailed study of the intricacies of the inter-organisational supply chain. But more recently insights from this perspective have been supplemented by the application of the tools of social network analysis to organisational studies. Among others, innovation studies particularly benefited from these methodological and theoretical advancement.

This module provides an overview of the network concept as applicable to business and innovation, drawing from the concepts of the value system, network economics, and social capital. It surveys network applications to parent-subsidiary relationships, strategic alliances, global value chains, knowledge diffusion and the management of informal relationships within organisations. The second part of the module stimulate a critical reflection on the complex relationship between innovation and globalization, specifically remarking the embedded and networked nature of innovative processes with regional and national innovation systems and advancing the understanding of the challenges associated with innovation management.

Learning Outcomes: On successful completion of this course a student will be able to:

1. Demonstrate deep and systematic understanding of the concepts of network analysis and the analysis of large datasets; The theory of social capital; A range of contemporary applications of network analysis to business; A range of contemporary tools and techniques of social network analysis and business analytics; the multifaceted nature of innovation; the role of different actors and stakeholders in sustaining innovation; the impact of countries’ and regions’ characteristics on the innovation process

2. Conceive intra and inter-organisational relationships as networks; Critically engage with economic, sociological, psychological and mathematical literature in application to business problems; Value the varying benefits of cohesion and diversity; consider ethical dimensions of social network analysis; use computational techniques to analysis and presentation of social network data and large datasets.

3. Independently analyse data about real organisations in complex situations and solve sophisticated managerial problems, with clear understanding of limitations.

4. Write substantial reports, utilizing well-developed transferable skills in effective, professional communication such as such formatting, spelling, and story-telling.

5. Reflect on and improve personal performance in response to formative assessment. Work professionally in teams.

Specifically you are expected to:

• Provide an overview of the internationalization strategy of the company (indicatively 400 words)
• Use network analysis techniques and visualizations to describe the network in which it is embedded (indicatively 700 words)
• Provide a preliminary, exploratory, interpretation of the role played by the company and others of particular note, considering aspects such as their centrality (degree, betweenness, closeness/farness, and eigenvector centrality), location, activity, size and other relevant characteristics (500 words)
• Discuss the implication of industry and country environments on the innovation strategy of the firm (400 words)

Role Specialization

Presently, I am working towards obtaining my master’s degree in Family Nurse Practitioner. Over the course of my twenty plus years as a nurse, I have seen how the quality of one’s life can improve outcomes and create a better lifestyle. My goal is to use my degree to help educate others on positive outcomes that a healthier lifestyle can have on one’s health. This not only includes a healthier diet and exercise plan but also an individual’s outlook on life and overview of one’s self. Health-related quality of life is of the Healthy People 2020’s objective. One of the goals of Healthy People 2020 is to bring back alive the sense of well-being or the drive to survive (Healthypeople2020.org). By creating a healthier community, the burden and cost on healthcare can be reduced. The hospitals in rural areas struggle to keep up with the demands to meet the needs of the community (Morris, M., 2018).

Research technique

South University’s online library is the main research tool that I use. I type keywords into the search engine and find articles pertinent to my topic. Here I have found several articles relating to health-related quality of life and studies regarding older adults and exercise, employment, stress, and health-related quality of life. I refer to Healthy People 2020 also for the objectives, goals and statistical resources. Other resources that I may use in my research is government links on the internet that may have statistics regarding my topic or programs available to assist with my topic such as the Good to Great program in Georgia to help motivate high school students to become more physically active, reduce the number of preventable infant deaths, and reduce the yearly numbers of patients readmitted in the hospital with diabetes related illnesses. One of the goals of Healthy People 2020 is to bring back alive the sense of well-being or the drive to survive (Healthypeople2020.org).

Potential Solution

Creating more nurse-led community-based education and coaching facilities within the community is one potential solution. These facilities have led to significant decreases in patients’ blood sugar, lipid levels, and body mass indexes (Huang, Y., 2017). Government programs to help fund education on the benefits of a healthier lifestyle so that everyone can have access needs to be created such as the Georgia program, Be Fit, Be Healthy, Be You. The nurse leaders of the communities need to take cooking classes, exercise classes, and coping with stress classes into the classrooms, churches, and employment. As more people become aware of not only the physical benefits of living well but also the psychological benefits, the easier it will be to reach everyone to strive for a health-related quality of life.

Schrack et al. & Ferrucci proposed an energetic model of frailty where physical exertion of walking with mobility limitations may be a factor in reduced activity and participation-disability in some older adults. When this occurs abnormalities in posture and gait contributed to a greater energy cost of walking, with adjustments for age and gait speed. One alternative to this is therapeutic exercise to improve the efficiency of gait with timing and coordination of movements.

Second part
Expert movers tired less easily in those motor tasks. Stroke patients who had task oriented treatment exercise helped with the gait. Multiple sclerosis patients treadmill gait exercise reduced the effort of walking. This type of exercise helped more than the endurance, balance, and strengthening exercise gait intervention in older adults with mobility limitations. The impact of the intervention on activity and participation is unknown.

Aging is accompanied by a progressive loss of skeletal muscle mass and strength, leading to the loss of functional capacity and an increased risk of developing chronic metabolic disease. The age-related loss of skeletal muscle mass is attributed to a disruption in the regulation of skeletal muscle protein turnover, resulting in an imbalance between muscle protein synthesis and degradation. As basal (fasting) muscle protein synthesis rates do not seem to differ substantially between the young and elderly.

many research groups have started to focus on the muscle protein synthetic response to the main anabolic stimuli, i.e., food intake and physical activity. Recent studies suggest that the muscle protein synthetic response to food intake is blunted in the elderly. The latter is now believed to represent a key factor responsible for the age-related decline in skeletal muscle mass. Physical activity and/or exercise stimulate postexercise muscle protein accretion in both the young and elderly.
third part
However, the latter largely depends on the timed administration of amino acids and/or protein before, during, and/or after exercise. Prolonged resistance type exercise training represents an effective therapeutic strategy to augment skeletal muscle mass and improve functional performance in the elderly. The latter shows that the ability of the muscle protein synthetic machinery to respond to anabolic stimuli is preserved up to very old age.

In this article showed that intake of high quality proteins may be an important issues in elderly people. the consumption of three different protein diets and their effect on protein metabolism were compared in elderly women. The three diets differed in the source of protein. The first diet was composed half of animal proteins and half of vegetable proteins where a third of the proteins consumed in the second diet were from vegetable and two thirds from animals.

In the third diet, a third of proteins were from animals and two thirds from vegetables. In this study nitrogen balance was not modified but whole body protein breakdown was not inhibited to the same extent by the meal when the protein source from vegetables in comparison with meat.
