I might message later with other research links that have found so far. but this week chapters are 3,4, 5 (here is what they are about) Chapter 3 We are reviewing early development this week.. from birth through childhood. It is so fascinating to see how an infant wakes up and begins to interact and recognize the world. The uniqueness of it and features that go along with a brand new person getting to know the world and bringing them to you has a lot of refreshment for adults … nothing like being reminded of how cool simple things really are. At the same time parents are always counting and watching to make sure that developmental milestones are reached. We also watch out for evidence of disorders and disabilities. Catching them early is so important as undoing a habit is much more difficult than retraining. What have you observed from this age? have you worked with any children that have disorders or unique development? How did it go? What do you recommend for others? In our home my oldest son was born with muconium in his lungs to a point that it caused some problems right of the bat.. Later on he developed ADD (no hyperactivity) and so we have had to tailor things to help him socialize and learn skills needed to attend to others. It is so not a problem right now because of that. If he doesn’t catch something as soon as he notices it he apologizes and comes to make it better or help out. It is a good example of how to do right… thank heavens it worked right!! Chapter 4: This chapter shows the nutz and boltz of cognitive development primarily through Piaget and Vygotsky’s theories. There is nothing more fascinating than to watch a young mind awaken to the world around us all. These theories give an overview of how this is done.. as well as tactics that should go on through out life. For instance, when adults throw temper tantrums (road rage, domestic abuse, etc) would be a good indicator that they have not achieved all the stages outlined by these theories. Some do very well as adults living a concrete lifestyle (I always get up at x:00 a.m. and go to bed at X:00 p.m., eat at this time, exercise at this time, and my things are always in their place). Most need to learn how to live with flexability and the all kinds of stuff that interfere with living a predictable and totally controlable life. Teaching this kind of acceptance and tolerance starts at a young age, and like the rest of the stages have indicators – Piaget; accommodation and assimiliation. Helping them learn it can be very fun… cooking and working with playdough can be the vehicles… “you’re making your own pizza so choose what to put on” then let them experiment. so they put chocolate chips on with the pepperonis.. they’ll figure out if it worked or not and do or not do again… these type of learning experiences – and letting them have their own head (choices) sets a great standard for more important things later in life. Of course other elements in life intrude on development. Substance abuse, dysfunctional living styles, chronic medical conditions, excessive stress, social/emotional alienation, etc. all impact development. There is a lot of research into the things that help and hinder development. They are so worth learning about… Chapter 5: (some examples are included)
