Once you received your case number, answer the following questions:

Discuss the specific socioeconomic, spiritual, lifestyle, and other cultural factors related to the health of the patient you selected.

Utilizing the five assessment domains, which ones would you utilize on your patients in conducting a comprehensive nutritional assessment.

Discuss the functional anatomy and physiology of a psychiatric mental health patient. Which key concepts must a nurse know in order to assess specific functions?

Submission Instructions:

Your instructor will assign you your case number and you will post on the case number you have been assigned.

You will reply to the other two case studies (One of each).

Your initial post should be at least 500 words, formatted and cited in current APA style with support from at least 2 academic sources. Your initial post is worth 8 points.

You should respond to at least two of your peers by extending, refuting/correcting, or adding additional nuance to their posts. Your reply posts are worth 2 points (1 point per response.)

All replies must be constructive and use literature where possible.

Please post your initial response by 11:59 PM ET Thursday, and comment on the posts of two classmates by 11:59 PM ET Sunday.

You can expect feedback from the instructor within 48 to 72 hours from the Sunday due date.

Requirements: 500 words

Discuss the specific socioeconomic, spiritual, lifestyle, and other cultural factors related to the health of the patient you selected.

You must proofread your paper. But do not strictly rely on your computer’s spell-checker and grammar-checker; failure to do so indicates a lack of effort on your part and you can expect your grade to suffer accordingly. Papers with numerous misspelled words and grammatical mistakes will be penalized. Read over your paper – in silence and then aloud – before handing it in and make corrections as necessary. Often it is advantageous to have a friend proofread your paper for obvious errors. Handwritten corrections are preferable to uncorrected mistakes.

Use a standard 10 to 12 point (10 to 12 characters per inch) typeface. Smaller or compressed type and papers with small margins or single-spacing are hard to read. It is better to let your essay run over the recommended number of pages than to try to compress it into fewer pages.

Likewise, large type, large margins, large indentations, triple-spacing, increased leading (space between lines), increased kerning (space between letters), and any other such attempts at “padding” to increase the length of a paper are unacceptable, wasteful of trees, and will not fool your professor.

The paper must be neatly formatted, double-spaced with a one-inch margin on the top, bottom, and sides of each page. When submitting hard copy, be sure to use white paper and print out using dark ink. If it is hard to read your essay, it will also be hard to follow your argument.

Compassion fatigue is a real issue that truly needs further investigation. “Nurses are particularly vulnerable to compassion fatigue” (Boyle, 2011). What are ways we can combat this issue? I am attaching an interesting article if anyone would like to read. I would enjoy hearing different perspectives from anyone in the class about how this impacts leadership.

Select two change management models, and then compare and contrast them. Please also include at least one example of your experience with a change theory in your current practice.

A new director decides to reorganize the department in which you work. This reorganization comes about without input from the employees, and many of the nurses you oversee are feeling resentful of the change. As a nurse leader, identify factors that may lead to conflict and discuss ways you can manage them.

overtraining
Athletes often train without adequate recovery time leading to physical stress and a decreased performance. This is known as nonfunctional overreaching (NFOR) (Myrick, 2015). This can be seen in symptoms like fatigue, anxiety, reduced motivation, and concentration (Myrick, 2015). Overtraining syndrome (OTS) is when decrease in performance lasts for months to years even with adequate rest (Myrick, 2015). Prevention of overtraining and overreaching is important to avoid physical stress and injury.

Spinal column fractures
Spinal column fractures (SCFs) injuries range from pain, long term disabilities, or death. In the US approximately 8,000 spinal cord injuries occur annually including fracturs and dislocations (Winters & Nuttal, 2015). Simple fractures to the spinal column may not cause injury to the spinal cord and only requires pain management. Compression fractures and dislocations can place the spinal cord at significant risk for injury. Nurses need to ask patients if they experience numbness or weakness in addition to vertebral column pain to assess for sensation and pain. To access motor function as the patient to shrug their shoulders against resistance, assess bilateral hand grip strength, raise each leg off the bed, plantarflex and dorsiflex feet against resistance (Winters & Nuttall, 2015).

congenital hip dysplasia
Congenital hip dysplasia (aka dysplasia of the hips (DDH)), can occur congenitally or later in childhood it entails underdevelopment or alignment of the femoral head and acetabulum. The most common sign is limited abduction of the hip. This condition if undiagnosed does not cause pain until in person’s 40s or 50s due to onset of osteoarthritis. A mechanical compression of the hip occurs if the fetus pelvis becomes fixed to the maternal pelvis (Blaszko-Helming, 2015). Girls are more likely to be affected by DDH than boys, cerebral palsy is associated with DDH, and there is a hereditary component to DDH. The left hip is the most common to involve full dislocation, only 20% of DDH are bilateral (Blaszko-Heming, 2015). If correction of the dislocated hip is made early a normal hip will result; however, if the child begins walking and the diagnosis has been missed the deformities are not reversible.

septic arthritis

Septic arthritis is unfortunately becoming more common; it is an infection of the joint cavity often referred to as infectious arthritis. Recent joint surgery, prosthetic joint, skin infection, diabetes, and intra-articular injection are all risk factors for septic arthritis (Oliphant, 2015). Common clinical findings include fever, joint immobility, erythema, acute joint pain, swelling, and tenderness. The knee is the most common joint affected. Elevated white blood cell count, erythrocyte sedimentation rate and C- reactive protein are expected to be elevated indicating an inflammatory response (Oliphant, 2015). Joint aspiration is considered “gold standard” in the diagnosis of septic arthritis. Patients often undergo surgical interventions, long term antibiotic use, and follow up appointments with infectious disease and orthopedics to manage this orthopedic infection.

Assignment: Models of Grieving
The death of a loved one is a significant event that everyone experiences. An individual’s social environment, including societal and familial cultural factors, may influence how an individual approaches death or grieves the loss of someone else who dies. You can anticipate addressing grief in your social work practice and, therefore, should develop an understanding of the grieving process.

Models of grieving may identify stages through which an individual progresses in response to the death of a loved one; however, these stages do not necessarily occur in lockstep order. People who experience these stages may do so in different order or revisit stages in a circular fashion. Understanding the various ways individuals cope with grief helps you to anticipate their responses and to assist them in managing their grief. Select one model of grieving to address in this assignment.

Addressing the needs of grieving family members can diminish your personal emotional, mental, and physical resources. In addition to developing strategies to assist grieving individuals in crisis, you must develop strategies that support self-care.

In this Assignment, you apply a grieving model to work with families in a hospice environment and suggest strategies for self-care.

By Day 7
Submit a 2- to 4-page paper in which you:

Explain how you, as a social worker, might apply the grieving model you selected to your work with families in a hospice environment.
Explain why you selected to use the grieving model you selected versus other models of grief.
Identify components of the grieving model that you think might be difficult to apply to your social work practice. Explain why you anticipate these challenges.
Identify strategies you might use for your own self care as a social worker dealing with grief counseling. Explain why these strategies might be effective.
Support your Assignment with specific references to the resources. Be sure to provide full APA citations for your references.

ADDITIONAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE CLASS

Discussion Questions (DQ)

Initial responses to the DQ should address all components of the questions asked, include a minimum of one scholarly source, and be at least 250 words.
Successful responses are substantive (i.e., add something new to the discussion, engage others in the discussion, well-developed idea) and include at least one scholarly source.
One or two sentence responses, simple statements of agreement or “good post,” and responses that are off-topic will not count as substantive. Substantive responses should be at least 150 words.
I encourage you to incorporate the readings from the week (as applicable) into your responses.

Weekly Participation

Your initial responses to the mandatory DQ do not count toward participation and are graded separately.
In addition to the DQ responses, you must post at least one reply to peers (or me) on three separate days, for a total of three replies.
Participation posts do not require a scholarly source/citation (unless you cite someone else’s work).
Part of your weekly participation includes viewing the weekly announcement and attesting to watching it in the comments. These announcements are made to ensure you understand everything that is due during the week.

APA Format and Writing Quality

Familiarize yourself with APA format and practice using it correctly. It is used for most writing assignments for your degree. Visit the Writing Center in the Student Success Center, under the Resources tab in LoudCloud for APA paper templates, citation examples, tips, etc. Points will be deducted for poor use of APA format or absence of APA format (if required).
Cite all sources of information! When in doubt, cite the source. Paraphrasing also requires a citation.
I highly recommend using the APA Publication Manual, 6th edition.

Use of Direct Quotes

I discourage overutilization of direct quotes in DQs and assignments at the Masters’ level and deduct points accordingly.
As Masters’ level students, it is important that you be able to critically analyze and interpret information from journal articles and other resources. Simply restating someone else’s words does not demonstrate an understanding of the content or critical analysis of the content.
It is best to paraphrase content and cite your source.

LopesWrite Policy

For assignments that need to be submitted to LopesWrite, please be sure you have received your report and Similarity Index (SI) percentage BEFORE you do a “final submit” to me.
Once you have received your report, please review it. This report will show you grammatical, punctuation, and spelling errors that can easily be fixed. Take the extra few minutes to review instead of getting counted off for these mistakes.
Review your similarities. Did you forget to cite something? Did you not paraphrase well enough? Is your paper made up of someone else’s thoughts more than your own?
Visit the Writing Center in the Student Success Center, under the Resources tab in LoudCloud for tips on improving your paper and SI score.

Late Policy

The university’s policy on late assignments is 10% penalty PER DAY LATE. This also applies to late DQ replies.
Please communicate with me if you anticipate having to submit an assignment late. I am happy to be flexible, with advance notice. We may be able to work out an extension based on extenuating circumstances.
If you do not communicate with me before submitting an assignment late, the GCU late policy will be in effect.
I do not accept assignments that are two or more weeks late unless we have worked out an extension.
As per policy, no assignments are accepted after the last day of class. Any assignment submitted after midnight on the last day of class will not be accepted for grading.

Communication

Communication is so very important. There are multiple ways to communicate with me:
Questions to Instructor Forum: This is a great place to ask course content or assignment questions. If you have a question, there is a good chance one of your peers does as well. This is a public forum for the class.
Individual Forum: This is a private forum to ask me questions or send me messages. This will be checked at least once every 24 hours.

You just basically responding to the student of what you felt compelling and enlightening

In the wake of President Obama’s first term election, many were quick to say that America was moving into what they call a “Post-Racial America”. This is simply not true. The effects of racial inequity, racial profiling and discrimination are still very present, even more so we see that society is beginning to backslide and communities are no further advanced in a positive post-racial era than before President Obama took office. Today we turn on the news and see tragic stories of young and old black men and women’s lives being taken too soon because they “fit” the profile. The reality is in America, racism and racial anxiety still exist on a heavy spectrum, they “fit” the description or look suspicious and scary, because society has ingrained in us that black men or people of color, in general, are thugs, deviants, are up to no good and will just start shooting if white folks are in their neighborhood. This discussion post will shed light on racial profiling, the constitutionality of racial profiling and the impact such policies may have on communities.

There isn’t any situation in which racial profiling should be legal, but it happens every day in cities and towns across the country, when law enforcement and private security target people of color for humiliating and often frightening detentions, interrogations, and searches without evidence of criminal activity and based on perceived race, ethnicity, national origin, or religion (ACLU.org, 2019). The 4th Amendment that is supposed to be in place to safeguard folks from illegal search and seizure was blatantly disregarded when the Supreme Court made its first ruling to sanction racial profiling. In Terry vs. Ohio police officers were given broader discretion with whom they may stop by the initiation of the “stop and frisk” ruling, meaning that if the officer believes there is reasonable suspicion, then the 4th Amendment safeguard no longer applies (Olsen, 2017). While it is seemingly reasonable for a law enforcement officer to stop someone if they feel that there is something suspicious, the use of this loosely written law leaves too much open for interpretation, even if it pertains to a motor vehicle stop, what is the actual cause of the stop? Is the officer being honest in their interpretation of why the stop took place? Lastly, during a traffic stop to assume guilt also takes away the innocent until proven guilty factor. Just because you “look” guilty doesn’t mean you are.

The impact of racial profiling has been seen to be awfully disastrous to communities all across the country. What is important to note is racial profiling is ineffective. It alienates communities from law enforcement, hinders community policing efforts, and causes law enforcement to lose credibility and trust among the people they are sworn to protect and serve (ACLU.org, 2019). Not to mention the fact that rulings like Terry v. Ohio, United States v. Brignoni-Ponce and Whren v. United States make it difficult, to darn near impossible to rely on the police for protection and promote fairness and justice in our communities (Olsen, 2017). Racial profiling has led countless people to live in fear, casting entire communities as suspect simply because of what they look like, where they come from, or what religion they adhere to (ACLU.org, 2019).

The plain-view doctrine

The plain-view doctrine

Under the plain-view doctrine police officers who stop vehicles for traffic violations can search the car if there is probable cause. If there are items that the police officer notice are contraband or illegal substances. “Thus, the significant elements in any plain view doctrine seizure are: (1) the officer must already have lawful presence in an area protected by the 4th Amendment. In a house, that would mean that the officer must have entered with a warrant, exigency or consent. (2) The officer must observe an item in plain view. (3) The officer must immediately recognize the item as evidence or contraband without making a further intrusion. It should be recognized that officers routinely make plain view observations, but that does not necessarily mean that the item may be seized unless the officer has met the elements above.” (Ryan) If the vehicle has illegal contraband then, the police officer can search the car. However, if the police officer does not see any contraband and suspects the suspect is hiding something, then the police must ask for permission to search the car. The police can ask the driver to step out of the car and frisk them for carrying a weapon. If drugs are found in the car, then the police can search the driver for more drug paraphernal. In Brendlin v. California (2007), the Supreme Court held that all passengers inside a vehicle during a traffic stop are “seized” just as the driver is. A logical outgrowth of this ruling followed in Arizona v. Johnson (2009), when the Court determined that an officer may frisk a passenger in a car that has been lawfully stopped for a traffic violation, if the officer has developed reasonable suspicion that the passenger is armed and dangerous.
