You must proofread your paper. But do not strictly rely on your computer’s spell-checker and grammar-checker; failure to do so indicates a lack of effort on your part and you can expect your grade to suffer accordingly. Papers with numerous misspelled words and grammatical mistakes will be penalized. Read over your paper – in silence and then aloud – before handing it in and make corrections as necessary. Often it is advantageous to have a friend proofread your paper for obvious errors. Handwritten corrections are preferable to uncorrected mistakes.

Use a standard 10 to 12 point (10 to 12 characters per inch) typeface. Smaller or compressed type and papers with small margins or single-spacing are hard to read. It is better to let your essay run over the recommended number of pages than to try to compress it into fewer pages.

Likewise, large type, large margins, large indentations, triple-spacing, increased leading (space between lines), increased kerning (space between letters), and any other such attempts at “padding” to increase the length of a paper are unacceptable, wasteful of trees, and will not fool your professor.

The paper must be neatly formatted, double-spaced with a one-inch margin on the top, bottom, and sides of each page. When submitting hard copy, be sure to use white paper and print out using dark ink. If it is hard to read your essay, it will also be hard to follow your argument.

Chapter 5, Cultural Diversity – nursing homework essays

Chapter 5, Cultural Diversity

Chapter 5, Cultural Diversity

Case Studies, Chapter 5, Cultural Diversity

You are a nurse caring for a 53-year-old married Muslim woman who is 2 days postoperative for extensive abdominal surgery. She has complicated dressing changes three times daily, which require at least two staff to complete. Her husband is by her bedside, when he is not at work, and is very caring and attentive. The work schedule for tomorrow indicates that the LPN and nursing assistant on your team will be male. What are your actions to ensure culturally competent care? (Learning Objectives 2 and 5)

What patient information is pertinent to foster culturally competent care?

What questions should you ask yourself when caring for this patient?

What steps would you take to provide culturally competent care?

You are a nurse caring for a 79-year-old man, a retired railroad worker who was admitted with dizziness and a history of falling. During your shift, your nursing assistant reports (with frustration) that the patient refuses to use his urinal while in bed and insists on standing bedside or walking to the bathroom to eliminate. The assistant requests a physician’s order for urinal use in bed only. What are your appropriate actions in this scenario? (Learning Objective 6)

What questions should you ask yourself in this situation?

What teaching (and to whom) could be involved in resolving the situation?

What factors could be inhibiting cultural sensitivity?

You must proofread your paper. But do not strictly rely on your computer’s spell-checker and grammar-checker; failure to do so indicates a lack of effort on your part and you can expect your grade to suffer accordingly. Papers with numerous misspelled words and grammatical mistakes will be penalized. Read over your paper – in silence and then aloud – before handing it in and make corrections as necessary. 1. Choose two of the principles of communication.
  2. Provide two examples for each of the principles (so you will have a total of 4 examples by the end of your post).
  3. How could you apply your knowledge of these principles in a future interaction to prevent or reduce misunderstanding?

Principles of Communication

  1. Communication is symbolic: We communicate using words, but the words are only symbols, not the actual objects themselves. Communication involves words, pictures, sounds, and marks, all of which may represent something else.
  2. Communication involves a shared meaning: When you speak with a friend, and she tells you of an experience that she recently had, you are able to understand her experience because you have a shared meaning of the words and symbols that she uses to describe the experience.
  3. Communication is a process: It evolves over time and after multiple engagements that build upon each other. This ongoing interaction changes the relationship.
  4. Communication is culturally determined: We all grow up in a culture and in that culture, we learn to speak and behave according to that culture. So when we communicate it will be based on which culture we grew up in.
  5. Communication occurs in a context: When we communicate it takes place in a certain area, and we have certain expectations based on that location. We have to take into account that people talk differently in different situations, you would not act the same in class as you would in a baseball game.
  6. Communication is purposeful: We communicate for a reason. There are five key reasons to communicate: Physiological Needs, Safety Needs, Social Needs, Esteem Needs, Self-Actualization Needs

The medical profession has a muddled and contradictory association

The medical profession has a muddled and contradictory association with its approach toward the tobacco industry. While the profession now firmly opposes to smoking and vigorously publicizes the serious, even fatal, health hazards associated with smoking, this was not always so. Advertisements for tobacco products, including cigarettes “… became a ready source of income for numerous medical organizations and journals, including the New England Journal of Medicine and the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), as well as many branches and bulletins of local medical associations” (Wolinsky & Brune, 1994). Physicians and reference to doctors and smoking were once common in tobacco industry advertisements. The story of physicians and promotion of smoking can be found in “The Doctors’ Choice Is America’s Choice” (Gardner & Brandt, 2006).

The role of physicians in the current opioid crisis is now under scrutiny on television (Farmer, 2019) by trade publications (King, 2018), peer-reviewed journals (deShazo, et al, 2018), and by physicians themselves (Hirsch, 2019).

In what way are the two situations comparable?
In what way are they different?
Apply the concept of moral equivalence. Is the conduct of doctors in relation to smoking and the tobacco industry morally equivalent to the conduct of doctors in the opioid crisis? Explain your position and be very specific.
