Assignment: United…or Not?
Events in the United States such as the riots in Charlottesville, Virginia, the battle over whether to allow immigrants and refugees to enter and remain in our country, the investigation into alleged Russian election collusion, the impeachment trial, the racial implications of the deaths of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor and, most recently and perhaps most importantly, the insurrection attempt at the Capitol on January 6th, have revealed deep divisions among everyday citizens. As these social, economic and ideological differences continue to manifest themselves with increasing incidents of violence and unrest, it begs the question of whether a shared commitment to the ideals of a constitutional democracy still exists in the United States.
Please discuss, using the above mentioned events and other recent events you believe to relevant, the following question:
How do social and demographic factors such as race, ethnicity, religion, gender, family structures, culture, education and age affect our definition and the expectations of a democracy? How do you, personally, define democracy?
Post two (2) questions related to the subject matter contained in the article. Questions may include, but are not limited to, matters of discrimination, religious freedom, gay rights and constitutional rights and privileges. Questions should be clearly stated and thought provoking, utilizing the text and concepts presented as their basis.
