a.) One of the main differences between the Commonwealth Health Corporation and Graves Gilbert clinic is the type of health care organization that they are. The Commonwealth Health Corporation is a not-for-profit healthcare system while Graves Gilbert Clinic is a physician owned healthcare system. The next difference that I noticed between these two health care organizations is the types of services that each of these healthcare organizations offer. The Commonwealth Health Corporation is best known for the Medical Center at Bowling Green and Graves Gilbert Clinic has several smaller locations that offer various specialties depending on the patients’ needs.

b.) I think that the differences in the type of healthcare organization that these two facilities are (not-for-profit vs. physician owned) play a huge role in how they market and offer their services. As a not-for-profit healthcare organization, the Commonwealth Health Corporation is not driven by profits, which means that they have a greater focus on patient care and well-being. In addition to this, the Commonwealth Health Corporation is exempt from taxes; therefore, they give back to their community by providing greater benefits than private and for-profit hospitals (Commonwealth Health Corporation, 2019). On the other hand, Graves Gilbert Clinic is a physician owned entity. This does not mean that they are solely driven by profit, but it is definitely a factor to consider when making decisions regarding patient care. The differences in the types of facilities and services that these healthcare organizations offer also impacts how they view patient care and what their goals are as an organization. The Commonwealth Health Corporation’s Medical Center here in Bowling Green is one of the main hospitals in this area. Hospitals such as this one are designed to offer patients with more extended care and treatment than facilities such as those that Graves Gilbert Clinic has. Graves Gilbert is more of an outpatient setting that provides patients with walk-in services as opposed to extended ones. I think this also goes back to the type of healthcare organization that these two facilities are. As a not-for-profit hospital, the Commonwealth Health Corporation isn’t focused on making a profit so they can take the extra measures to treat patients and have people staffed at the hospital at all times to assist patients whenever they need it. On the other hand, Graves Gilbert must be cost conscious as they are only open during certain hours and perform tasks in a cost effective manner.

c.) I have not had an experience with the Commonwealth Health Corporation, but I have had an experience with Graves Gilbert Clinic. During the spring semester of my freshman year of college, I woke up one day with a sore throat that didn’t seem to be getting any better. I noticed that I had white patches on the back of my throat, which is a common symptom of strep throat and decided to go and receive treatment. I went to one of the Graves Gilbert Clinic locations where I was tested for both the flu and strep throat. Even though both tests came back negative, and I had the patches on the back of my throat, the doctor told me that he was still going to treat me as if I had strep since it was the time of year that many people get sick. I feel like this action goes along with the Graves Gilbert Clinic mission statement that aims to “provide sensitive, compassionate care to our patients with respect to the total well being of the individual” (2019).

a. The main difference between these two organizations is that the Med Center is a not-for-profit health care system that provides benefits to the community that are greater than the taxes we would pay for a for-profit private business. The value of their benefits extends beyond the dollars, meaning they rely more on the quality of care they provide to the people. The Medical Center is also a diverse group of subsidiaries. On the other hand, Graves Gilbert is a multi-specialty, private for-profit clinic. They aren’t necessarily an in-patient facility either, but I believe both have many similarities.

b. Both the Medical Center and Graves Gilbert are very similar in their mission statements in my opinion. The only differences I see in them are in the Med Center’s statement they proceed to say how the care they give for an individual goes beyond the dollar amount and really emphasize on the quality in which they give the care. While on the other hand, Graves Gilbert just states that they are the preferred and preeminent provider of quality health care services in Kentucky. I believe this says a lot about how they market their companies. The Med Center isn’t really worried about their dollar amount since they are a not-for-profit, and more about the quality in which they give the care to a patient. While, Graves Gilbert just wants you in and out and is on to the next patient like that. I’m not saying that don’t provide quality care like the Med Center, I just feel like they worry more about how many patients they can see in a day.

c. I have been to both places, so I don’t really have an issue with either one. Graves Gilbert is definitely closer to where I live, so I usually end up there anyway. But, the times I have gone to the Med Center I have enjoyed always my experience and thought all the staff members were very nice to each and every patient they saw. I feel like both are great clinics that provide the best quality care to each patient they can.
