challenges related to providing adequate health care in underdeveloped countries

Two challenges related to providing adequate health care in underdeveloped countries would be finding enough nurses that are willing to travel and finding enough medication and other medical related supplies. People in poor countries have limited access to healthcare, but there are new innovations in the works that could possibly change this problem. New innovations in financing, delivery, and regulation of health services hold promise for improving access to the poor, such as health equity funds, conditional cash transfers, and coproduction and regulation of health services (Peters, et al., 2008). There are 57 countries with a critical shortage of healthcare workers, a deficit of 2.4 million doctors and nurses (Naicker, Plange-Rhule, Tutt, & Eastwood, 2009).

Strategies that I would use to get more nurses and medical supplies to underdeveloped countries would be to make a list of the nurses that are willing to donate their time and services to go to different countries. After it is noted how many nurses would like to volunteer to go, I would also reach out to different church organizations and see if I could get more volunteers that way. If enough volunteers are not gathered by doing those two things, I would then offer an incentive or bonuses to nurses to get more to sign up that way. To get medical supplies I would start by reaching out to certain medical supply companies to see if they can donate anything. I would also set up donation bins to gather any supplies the community would like to donate. I would talk to different hospitals to see about getting the expired supplies to take over as well. The hospital I work for donates all of the expired saline bags, medications, foley trays, gauze, or anything that has an expired date on it. I think that is a good idea because most of those items are things that we take for granted and it is things that will continue to serve its purpose outside of the expiration date.

I think no matter where we are in the world, nurses should always advocate for quality of health care for their patients. We will make the best out of each situation, but we must always provide quality services.  Although the quantity rather than quality of health services has been the focus historically in developing countries, ample evidence suggest that quality of care (or lack of it) must be at the center of every discussion about better health (John, Tauiwalo, Robalino, & Frenk, 2006).
