ASSIGNMENT: Reaction Paper 1 — Coming of age in Samoa

Introduction:

Students will be required to write reaction papers (3 pages long) that respond to key issues discussed in the two ethnographies covered in the course. These papers will be submitted in the Assignments Area and run through SafeAssign to check for plagiarism.

Note: This is an essay, it must include an introduction, two (or more) body paragraphs in which you discuss the article and other readings, compare and contrast the ideas, and discuss critiques of problems with the work, and a conclusion. You need to include proper citations in the Chicago Manual of Style Author/Date Format (the list of references is not included in the two page length requirement).

Reaction Paper Prompt:

Coming of age in Samoa by Margaret Mead (1928) examines the experiences of adolescent girls in Samoa and contrasts these experiences with those of adolescents in the United States during the same time period. Now that you have finished reading Margaret Mead’s book and some to the responses to her work (Freeman, Shankman, Orans, and Coté) reflect on what you have learned about the sexual lives of adolescents in Samoa and their lives more broadly.

Essay Content:

Reflect on the following questions in your essay:

1) What were Margaret Mead’s goals in the book?

2) What methods did Margaret Mead use to gather information?

3) How do Samoan girls deal with adolescence?

4) Why was the sexual lies of adolescent girls such an important part of the book?

5) Overall, how successful was mead in accomplishing her goals? Explain.

6) Using the articles by Freeman, Shankman, Orans, and Coté, discuss: what are some of the weaknesses of the Margaret Mead’s work?

7) Was Derek Freeman correct? Discuss the Mead/Freeman controversy, using evidence from Mead’s book and the work of the Freeman, Shankman, Orans and Coté, discuss whether or not you think Margaret Mead was hoaxed or mis-represented her data.

Format/Submission:

  1. This is an essay, you must have an introduction, body and conclusion. Bullet points/outlines will not be accepted.
  2. Use an easy to read type phase such as Times New Roman. You must use 10-12 point font and double space your work. Essays are expected to be two pages long.
  3. You must include a header at the top of the page that includes your name, the assignment title (Reaction Paper 1 – Coming of age in Samoa), and the course (ANTH 205).
  4. Use the Chicago Manual of Style Author-Date Format for parenthetical citations in the body of the essay and your list of references at the end of the essay. (It is acceptable to use only readings that have been assigned in the course).
  5. The title of your document must include your name, the course, and the assignment name (Jade_Doe_ANTH205_Whats in a Quote Sex and Sexuality.docx)
  6. Submit in the Assignments area by Sunday February 27 at 11:59 pm in a pdf of .docx format
