Journal Entry: Sam Houston Elementary school Odessa Texas

Describe – Describe your clinical experience and objectives. It was a great day spend in this elementary school. My major objective was to learn what the school nurse does. I have little or inadequate knowledge about what the school nurse does. However, my experience during the day was that I discover that a lot of students are undergoing through illnesses such as: diabetes, asthma, and migraine headache. The school Nurse knows each one of them and the time he or she is supposed to come to her office for check off and their medication. The major challenge I faced was the fact that most student will want to escape from classes by creating stories like stomach pain. The nursing intervention in this kind of situation I saw from the school nurse was just given them water, candy, and some crackers. When this is done, we will put them under observation for some few minutes and ask them to go back to class.

Reflect – Reflect and relate your clinical experience to at least 3 course/clinical objectives. Specify if this was for Men’s Health, or Geriatric Nursing. I was able to relate my clinical experience to my clinical objective. In men’s health the school nursing has responsibilities call the father and instruct for screening if she notice the child with certain disease and is suspecting that it could be genetic since men don’t mostly go for screening. Also, in women’s health the same. In geriatric look into their medical record to see if any family member has the history of the illness. This is just to include making sure that children get the health care they need, including emergency care in the school; keeping track of the state-required vaccinations that children have received; carrying out the required screening of the children based on state law.
